What is it doing?

Documented failures

Drain hose

Usually DIY

DIY.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Straighten out any kink in the hose run and re-seat the clamps — this alone fixes a surprising share of 'leaking' calls.

Check, in this order

  1. Trace the hose end to end with a flashlight — a kinked or pinched hose behind the unit causes standing water and looks like a pump failure.
  2. Check both hose clamps for looseness or corrosion.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Shut off the water supply and bail any standing water.
  2. Photograph the hose routing and clamp positions before disconnecting.
  3. Release the clamps and swap the hose, matching the same routing.
  4. Restore the water supply and run a cycle checking every fitting for drips.

How you know it worked. A full cycle with no water pooling at either end of the hose and no drips at the clamps.

Water inlet valve

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the ice machine is not making ice

DIY once you've confirmed the coil with a multimeter.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Pull and rinse the inlet screen inside the valve — sediment blockage there gets mistaken for a dead valve constantly.

Check, in this order

  1. Confirm household water pressure is adequate — a valve starved of pressure produces the same 'no ice' symptom as a failed valve.
  2. Test the valve coil for continuity before replacing it.
  3. Check the inlet screen inside the valve for sediment, a very common false failure.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Shut off the water supply and unplug the unit.
  2. Photograph the wiring and tubing before disconnecting.
  3. Test the valve coil with a multimeter to confirm before ordering a part.
  4. Swap the valve, reconnect tubing and wiring, and restore water and power.
  5. Run a fill cycle and check the fitting for drips.

How you know it worked. The mold fills fully on the next cycle and no water weeps at the fitting.

Thermistor

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if it is damaged or missing

DIY once tested.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clear ice away from the sensor itself before assuming it's failed — packed ice against the thermistor reads as 'always full' or 'always empty' depending on the model.

Check, in this order

  1. Test the thermistor for the expected resistance change between room temperature and a bag of ice — a reading that never changes is the one to replace.
  2. Confirm the bin isn't just overfilled and blocking the sensor.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Unplug the unit and locate the thermistor in the ice bin or near the mold.
  2. Photograph the connector before disconnecting.
  3. Test it with a multimeter, then swap it if it fails.
  4. Reconnect and restore power.

How you know it worked. The unit correctly starts and stops making ice as the bin empties and fills.

Drain pump

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the ice machine will not drain

DIY.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clear any kink in the drain line and check for a clogged low point before assuming the pump has failed.

Check, in this order

  1. Listen during the drain step — a hum with no water movement points at a seized pump, silence points at wiring or the control board instead.
  2. Check the drain line for a kink or clog before condemning the pump.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Shut off water, unplug the unit, and bail any standing water in the reservoir.
  2. Photograph the wiring and hose clamps before disconnecting.
  3. Release the pump from its mount and swap it, reseating every clamp.
  4. Restore water and power, then run a cycle watching for leaks.

How you know it worked. The reservoir drains fully with no standing water and no odor after a few cycles.

Circulation pump

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the ice machine is not making ice

DIY.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clean any visible mineral scale off the pump outlet and reservoir — buildup restricts flow long before the pump actually fails.

Check, in this order

  1. Confirm water is actually reaching the mold during the freeze cycle — weak circulation is the classic cause of hollow or small cubes, not a thermostat or valve problem.
  2. Check for mineral buildup restricting the pump's outlet.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Shut off water, unplug the unit, and bail the reservoir.
  2. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting.
  3. Swap the pump and reseat it fully in its mount.
  4. Restore water and power and run a full freeze cycle.

How you know it worked. The next batch of cubes comes out solid and full-sized, not hollow or shrunken.

Start relay

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the ice machine will not work at all

DIY once tested with a multimeter. If the compressor itself doesn't run even on a known-good relay, that's a technician job.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Confirm the outlet and breaker are good before assuming a relay failure.

Check, in this order

  1. Listen for the compressor trying and failing to start — clicking or humming that cuts out points at the relay rather than the compressor itself.
  2. Test the relay for continuity before replacing it.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Unplug the unit and locate the relay at the compressor.
  2. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting.
  3. Test the relay, then swap it if it fails.
  4. Reconnect and restore power.

How you know it worked. The compressor starts reliably and the unit begins cooling within a normal few minutes.

Control board

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the ice machine will not work at all

DIY once the simpler causes are ruled out. Get a technician to confirm before buying a board — it's the most expensive part and the most misdiagnosed.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Check the outlet and breaker before assuming the board has failed.

Check, in this order

  1. Rule out the water supply, the inlet valve, and the outlet/breaker first — all are cheaper and all present as 'nothing happens.'
  2. Inspect the board for scorching or a swollen capacitor.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Unplug the unit and locate the board behind its access panel.
  2. Photograph every connector before disconnecting.
  3. Transfer connectors one at a time onto the new board against your photos.
  4. Restore power and run a full cycle.

Water inlet tube

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the ice maker is not making ice

DIY. Call a plumber if the shut-off valve itself won't close.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Tighten the compression fittings at both ends — many leaks here are just a loose nut.

Check, in this order

  1. Trace the tube with a flashlight for a crack or a loose compression fitting — this is often mistaken for a valve or pump leak.
  2. Check the fitting at both ends.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Shut off the water supply and bail any water.
  2. Photograph the tube routing before disconnecting.
  3. Swap the tube and reseat both fittings hand-tight plus a quarter turn.
  4. Restore water and check every fitting dry before closing anything up.

How you know it worked. No moisture at either fitting after a full fill cycle.

Door seal

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if it is damaged or missing

DIY.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clean the gasket and its channel first — trapped debris holds the door open a fraction and produces the exact same symptom as a torn seal.

Check, in this order

  1. Inspect the gasket for tears, hardening, or a section pulled out of its channel — a bad seal lets warm, humid air in and causes frost, mushy cubes, and stale odors in the bin.
  2. Run a hand along the seal to feel for cold air leaking through while the door is shut.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Unplug the unit.
  2. Peel the old gasket from its channel, noting the orientation.
  3. Clean the channel completely.
  4. Press the new gasket in from the center of each run outward so it seats without stretching short.

How you know it worked. No frost buildup and no odor in the ice bin after a few days, with the seal holding cold air evenly all the way around.
