Documented failures

Lid lock

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the washer will not start

DIY. If a new lock still won't register closed, check the wiring harness for a chafe point near the hinge before condemning a second part.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clean the strike and switch area of detergent residue and lint first — a gummed-up striker often won't seat even though the lock itself is fine.

Check, in this order

  1. TOP-LOAD only — front-load washers use the door lock on the boot, covered separately above.
  2. Confirm the lid actually closes flush and nothing is holding it open — the switch can't sense a lid that isn't fully down.
  3. Listen for a click as the lid closes; no click at all points at the switch/lock assembly rather than its wiring.
  4. With power off, test the switch's continuity with the lid held shut versus open before ordering a new assembly.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Unplug the washer and remove the console or lid-hinge trim to reach the lock/switch assembly — this varies by brand, so photograph screws and clips as you go.
  2. Photograph the wiring harness plug before disconnecting it.
  3. Unscrew the lid lock/switch assembly from the tub flange or console.
  4. Fit the replacement, reconnect the photographed harness, and reinstall the trim.

How you know it worked. The lid locks (or the switch registers closed) at the start of a Spin cycle, and the cycle completes without stopping for a lid fault.

Worth fixing? Repair - the part is a small fraction of a new machine. Part $13.59–$33.67 against $1,448.99 for a new machine (2.3%).Part cost only. A service call adds a regional diagnostic fee plus labour.

Timer

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the washer will not start

DIY, but label every wire as you go — a mis-wired replacement timer can run the wrong step or none at all. If cycles still won't advance with a new timer, the motor or door/lid switch circuit is next.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Check the outlet and power cord first — a dead timer and no power at all present exactly the same way, nothing happens.

Check, in this order

  1. This is the mechanical dial timer some washers use instead of an electronic control board — turning the dial does nothing and the cycle never advances.
  2. Confirm the dial is being pushed in fully where the platform requires it — an unengaged dial can look identical to a dead timer.
  3. Listen for the timer motor's faint hum or tick when the dial is turned — silence points at the timer motor itself rather than the contacts.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Remove the console or dial to reach the timer unit behind it.
  2. Photograph the wiring harness before disconnecting it — a mechanical timer often has many similar-looking leads.
  3. Unscrew the timer from its mount and fit the replacement in the same position.
  4. Reconnect the harness exactly as photographed and refit the dial and console.

How you know it worked. Turning the dial advances the cycle normally and the machine completes a full wash from start to spin.

Heating element

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the dryer is not heating

TECHNICIAN for a persistent heating error. The element itself is a DIY part only once a technician has confirmed the diagnosis.

Try this first — it costs nothing. No no-part fix for this one - go straight to the checks.

Check, in this order

  1. Confirm the cycle actually heats - many cold/eco cycles never do, which is not a fault.
  2. Follow the manual's heating error step: unplug 60 minutes, restore power, retry.
  3. If the heating error persists after that reset, call for service.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Check the cycle is one that actually heats; many eco cycles never do.
  2. Follow the manual's heating error step: unplug 60 minutes, restore power, retry.
  3. If the heating error persists, have the element and its thermistor tested for continuity before replacing.
  4. Access is behind the lower front or rear panel depending on revision — photograph the terminals.
  5. Fit the element, ensuring the mounting nut is snug enough to seal the gasket.

How you know it worked. Wash water warms on a hot cycle and the heating error does not return.

Water inlet valve

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the washer will not fill

Replacing the valve is DIY. BUT if the machine keeps filling when it should not, close the faucets, unplug it and call for service - do not attempt that one.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clean the inlet filter screens - manual: Cleaning the Water Inlet Filters.

Check, in this order

  1. Check both faucets are fully open and the hoses are not kinked - the manual's first two the fill error causes.
  2. Clean the inlet filter screens (manual: MAINTENANCE > Cleaning the Water Inlet Filters); hard-water scale is a common cause and needs no parts.
  3. If the machine fills with the power off, the valve is stuck open and must be replaced.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Close both faucets and unscrew the inlet hoses from the back of the machine.
  2. Pull the filter screens out with pliers and soak them in white vinegar (manual: Cleaning the Water Inlet Filters) — scale here causes the fill error with no part needed.
  3. If the screens were clean, remove the top panel to reach the valve body.
  4. Photograph the wiring and hose positions — hot and cold are not interchangeable.
  5. Swap the valve, reconnect in the photographed order, and reattach the hoses.
  6. Open the faucets and check for weeping at both couplings before running a cycle.

How you know it worked. Machine fills at a normal rate on a cold and a warm cycle, and does NOT fill when powered off.

Drain pump

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the washer is not draining

DIY. Escalate only if the pump is fine and the drain error persists, which points at the control board or wiring.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clean the drain filter - manual: MAINTENANCE.

Check, in this order

  1. Clean the drain filter behind the lower access panel FIRST - a coin or lint clog mimics a dead pump exactly and costs nothing.
  2. Confirm the drain hose is not kinked and its end is below 96 in (2.4 m) - the manual lists both as the drain error causes.
  3. With power off, spin the pump impeller by hand; if it is seized or noisy, replace the pump.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Open the lower access panel and drain through the filter hose into a shallow pan.
  2. Remove and inspect the pump filter — coins, hair clips and lint clog it and mimic a dead pump exactly.
  3. If the filter was clean, photograph the pump's wiring connectors, then unplug them.
  4. Release the hose clamps to the sump and the drain hose; expect more water.
  5. Unscrew the pump from its mount, fit the replacement, and reconnect clamps and connectors in the photographed order.
  6. Run a Rinse+Spin with the panel still off and watch for leaks before closing up.

How you know it worked. Run Rinse+Spin. A good repair drains fully within the drain step with no drain error and no drip at either clamp.

Thermal fuse

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the dryer stops mid-cycle

DIY once the vent is confirmed clear. A fuse that blows again shortly after a correct fit and a clear vent means the thermostat or blower wheel is the underlying fault.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clear the lint screen and check the full exhaust run for restriction before fitting a new fuse — if the vent stays blocked, the new fuse will blow again.

Check, in this order

  1. This is the DRYER half of a stacked laundry center or washer/dryer combo unit — the dryer stops partway through a cycle, or won't start at all, while the washer side is unaffected.
  2. Check the exhaust vent and lint screen for a blockage first — restricted airflow overheating the blower housing is the single most common reason a thermal fuse blows.
  3. Test the fuse for continuity with a multimeter — a blown thermal fuse reads open and must be replaced, never bypassed.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Remove the dryer half's rear panel or blower housing cover to reach the thermal fuse, usually mounted on the housing itself.
  2. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting the two leads.
  3. Unscrew the old fuse from the housing and fit the replacement in the same position.
  4. Reconnect the leads exactly as photographed and refit the panel.

How you know it worked. The dryer half completes a full cycle without stopping, and the fuse shows continuity when tested afterward.

Drum roller

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the dryer drum is not spinning properly

DIY. If the noise continues with new rollers, check the drum's felt seal or glide strip next — worn felt rubs with a similar rhythmic sound.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Check for a trapped object in the drum seam before assuming a roller — this alone fixes a surprising share of 'thumping dryer' complaints for free.

Check, in this order

  1. This is the DRYER half of a stacked laundry center or washer/dryer combo unit — a rhythmic thump or squeal from the dryer that speeds up with the drum, not a washer noise.
  2. Rule out a foreign object caught between the drum and cabinet first — it costs nothing to check and sounds similar.
  3. Spin the drum by hand with the belt off and feel for a flat spot or grinding at the roller shafts — a worn roller has a flat side you can feel as it turns.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Remove the dryer half's rear panel and release the belt to let the drum come forward.
  2. Photograph the roller shaft positions before removing anything.
  3. Slide the old rollers off their shafts (or unbolt the bracket, depending on platform) and fit the replacements.
  4. Reinstall the drum, re-tension and refit the belt in its photographed routing, and refit the panel.

How you know it worked. The dryer half runs a full cycle with no thump or squeal, and the drum turns smoothly by hand.

Door switch

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the dryer will not start

DIY. If continuity is fine, the fault is upstream — the timer or thermostat on the dryer half.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clean around the switch plunger — lint and dryer-sheet residue build up here and can hold the plunger out exactly like a bad switch.

Check, in this order

  1. This is the DRYER half of a stacked laundry center or washer/dryer combo unit — the dryer won't start or won't run with the door shut, even though the washer side works normally.
  2. Press the switch by hand with the door open and watch/listen for the dryer attempting to start — no response points at the switch or its wiring rather than the timer or thermostat.
  3. Check the door actually latches fully and nothing is holding it open a crack.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Remove the door or the switch's console/bezel trim to reach the switch, prising gently with a putty knife.
  2. Photograph the wiring, then disconnect the switch.
  3. Test the old switch's continuity in both the pressed and released positions before condemning it.
  4. Fit the replacement switch, reconnect the wiring, and refit the trim.

How you know it worked. The dryer half starts as soon as the door is shut and stops immediately when it's opened mid-cycle.

Blower wheel

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the dryer is noisy

DIY. If airflow is still weak with a new wheel and a clear vent, check the duct run itself for a long or crushed section.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clean the lint screen and check the exterior exhaust vent flap opens fully — a clogged vent is the far more common cause of weak airflow and costs nothing to rule out.

Check, in this order

  1. This is the DRYER half of a stacked laundry center or washer/dryer combo unit — weak airflow or a rattling/whistling noise while the dryer runs, not the washer.
  2. Confirm the exhaust vent and lint screen are fully clear first — a blocked vent produces the identical weak-airflow symptom for free.
  3. Listen at the back of the dryer half during a cycle: a rattle or grind that changes with drum speed, or noticeably weak air at the exhaust with a clear vent, points at the blower wheel.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Remove the front or rear panel of the dryer half to reach the blower housing.
  2. Photograph the wheel's mounting before loosening it — orientation and set-screw position matter.
  3. Remove the set screw or retaining nut and pull the wheel off the motor shaft.
  4. Clear any lint or debris packed inside the housing while it's open.
  5. Fit the new wheel in the same orientation and secure the set screw or nut firmly.

How you know it worked. Strong, steady airflow at the exhaust vent and no rattle or grind through a full dryer cycle.

Thermostat

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the dryer is short-cycling

DIY once airflow is confirmed clear. Repeated tripping after a correct thermostat and a clear vent points at the blower wheel or duct run instead.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Clear the lint screen and check the exhaust vent for restriction before replacing either thermostat — both are airflow-triggered safety devices and a blocked vent trips them exactly the same way.

Check, in this order

  1. This is the DRYER half of a stacked laundry center or washer/dryer combo unit — short-cycling, running cold, or not running at all on the dryer side, not the washer.
  2. Confirm the vent and lint screen are clear first — restricted airflow makes a good high-limit thermostat trip and mimics this fault for free.
  3. Note the pattern: short, repeated on/off cycling points at the cycling thermostat; the dryer not running at all points at the high-limit thermostat, a safety cutout.
  4. Test the suspect thermostat's continuity at room temperature with a multimeter before replacing it.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Remove the dryer half's rear or top panel to reach the thermostat, usually clipped to the blower housing or the exhaust duct.
  2. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting it.
  3. Unclip the old thermostat and fit the replacement in the same position on the duct or housing.
  4. Reconnect the wiring exactly as photographed and refit the panel.

How you know it worked. The dryer half completes a full cycle at a steady temperature with no short-cycling and no unexpected shutoff.

Pressure switch

TECHNICIAN. On a water-level fault, close the faucets, unplug the machine and call for service.

Try this first — it costs nothing. No no-part fix for this one - go straight to the checks.

Check, in this order

  1. Check the clear pressure hose from the tub to the switch for kinks, water or debris - a blocked hose mimics a dead switch.
  2. Look for detergent sludge in the hose port.

Tools

The repair, in order

Drive belt

Usually DIY Vendor replaces this part if the dryer drum will not spin

DIY on a top-load belt-drive washer. If a pulley is seized or the belt keeps coming off after a correct fit, the transmission or motor mount is the underlying fault, not the belt.

Try this first — it costs nothing. Rule out an overloaded or badly unbalanced load first — repeated imbalance shutdowns can throw a belt off its pulleys with nothing actually broken; rebalance the load and retry before ordering a part.

Check, in this order

  1. First confirm which half: if this is the DRYER side of a stacked laundry center or washer/dryer combo — drum won't turn, motor hums, no water involved — that's the dryer's own belt and pulleys, a separate part from the washer belt covered here.
  2. On the washer side, spin the drum by hand with power off — a belt-drive top-load washer's drum should turn with resistance from the motor; spinning completely free means the belt is off or broken.
  3. Listen during a spin attempt: the motor running while the drum stays still points at the belt, not the motor.
  4. Look under the cabinet for a belt that's visibly frayed, glazed, or off its pulleys.

Before you open anything

Tools

The repair, in order

  1. Unplug the washer and reach the underside pulleys per the model's service position — top-load belt-drive washers route the belt between the motor and the transmission pulley.
  2. Photograph the belt's routing around both pulleys before removing anything; a belt fitted the wrong way round chews itself up again.
  3. Remove the old belt and check both pulleys spin freely by hand — a seized pulley is why the belt failed and will strip the new one too.
  4. Fit the new belt around the motor pulley first, then work it onto the transmission pulley by hand, keeping it centered and untwisted.
  5. Spin the pulleys by hand to seat the belt fully in both grooves before restoring power.

How you know it worked. The drum turns immediately with the motor on a Spin cycle, with no slipping sound and no drum lag.
