Two checks that cost nothing
- Check the door latch Open the door and push it firmly shut until you feel or hear the latch click into place. A door that's swung shut but hasn't fully latched — often because something in the upper rack is blocking it — won't let any cycle begin, and it looks identical to a dead control board from the outside.
- Check the breaker Go to the electrical panel and check whether the breaker feeding the dishwasher has tripped — it sometimes shares a circuit with the garbage disposal, so a disposal jam can knock out both. Flip it fully off, then back on. If the dishwasher powers up, the trip was the whole problem.
- Check for a control lock or delay start Look at the control panel for a small lock icon, and hold down the button under it for a few seconds to clear it — a control lock disables the start button entirely and is easy to bump while wiping down the panel. Also check for a delay-start light, which silently postpones the wash instead of failing to start.

How to check. With the door open, look at the latch hook and the strike plate it catches on for a broken tab, worn plastic, or misalignment. Close the door and check whether it catches solidly on the first try.

How to check. Test continuity across the fuse with a multimeter; location varies by model but it's often near the control board or the heating circuit.
No continuity means the fuse has blown. It's a one-shot safety device, so if a replacement blows again, look for an overheating cause upstream rather than replacing it a second time.

No continuity, or a screen packed with scale, means the valve isn't opening reliably — that shows up as poor fill (weak cleaning or no heat buildup) or, on a valve stuck partly open, as a slow leak.

How to check. Distinct from the door latch — this is the motorized or solenoid mechanism on models that electronically lock the door once a cycle begins. Listen for it engaging a few seconds after start, and test it per the video for continuity or resistance.

How to check. Check this only after every other component on the page tests good, and after the wiring connectors at the board are checked for a loose fit or corrosion.
Boards are the most expensive part on this list and the least likely actual cause — most symptoms that look like a board failure turn out to be a switch, latch, or pump upstream of it.
