Two checks that cost nothing
- Check the filter and drain basket Pull the lower rack and look at the filter assembly and the small basket or trap next to it at the bottom of the tub. A bottle cap, piece of glass, chicken bone, or produce sticker can lodge there and block the pump from moving water out. Clear anything you find and run the drain cycle again.
- Check the drain hose for a kink Look under the sink where the drain hose connects, usually to the garbage disposal or a dedicated drain fitting. A hose that's been pinched, kinked, or pushed down without a high loop can trap water and stop the dishwasher from emptying. Straighten it out and secure it high under the counter if it's sagging.
- Check for a disposal knockout plug If the garbage disposal was installed or replaced recently, check whether the plastic knockout plug inside its dishwasher inlet was removed. Left in place, it seals that opening completely and nothing can drain, no matter what's wrong or right with the dishwasher itself. This is a common miss after any disposal swap.

How to check. Shut off the water supply and cut power at the breaker, then pull the valve and look for mineral scale blocking the inlet screen; if it looks clear, test the solenoid coil for continuity with a multimeter.
No continuity, or a screen packed with scale, means the valve isn't opening reliably — that shows up as poor fill (weak cleaning or no heat buildup) or, on a valve stuck partly open, as a slow leak.

How to check. This one usually means pulling the machine out from under the counter and opening the base — cut power at the breaker and shut the water supply first. With the pump exposed, check the impeller for jammed debris, and listen or feel for the motor running when a cycle starts.
