- Clean the filter Pull out the lower rack and find the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub — it usually twists a quarter turn to release. Rinse it under the tap and check for a mesh clogged with food, glass shards, or a label stuck in it. A clogged filter is one of the single most common reasons a dishwasher stops cleaning well, and this fixes it in under five minutes.
- Check the spray arm holes Spin each spray arm by hand — it should turn freely with no resistance. Then look at the small holes along it, tilting it to the light. Mineral buildup or trapped food can plug them so water only reaches part of the load. Clear blocked holes with a toothpick or a stiff wire and rinse the arm before reinstalling it.
- Run the hot water first Before starting a cycle, run the kitchen tap nearest the dishwasher until the water turns hot, then start the machine. If the dishwasher's first fill is cold, it takes longer for the tub to reach cleaning temperature and detergent doesn't dissolve or work as well, leaving dishes looking under-washed even though nothing is broken.

How to check. Pull each spray arm off (most twist or clip free by hand) and hold it up to the light — look for jet holes clogged with mineral deposits or food, and spin it on its post to feel for wobble or a cracked mount.
Clogged jets explain streaky or spotty cleaning on part of a load; a wobbling or cracked arm can throw water sideways at the door instead of up into the racks, which reads as either poor cleaning or a leak depending on where it hits.

How to check. Shut off the water supply and cut power at the breaker, then pull the valve and look for mineral scale blocking the inlet screen; if it looks clear, test the solenoid coil for continuity with a multimeter.
