GE Dryer Noisy: 6 Causes, Ranked

Most-watched cause

Idler Pulley

A pulley that grinds or has a weak spring lets the belt slip or run loose, which shows up as noise or a drum that turns slower than it should.

Check yours now ↓

One cause below (drum bearing) is not a DIY job. Two checks cost nothing — do those first.

⚠ Unplug the machine before opening it. On a 240V dryer that means pulling the cord, not just switching it off at the panel.

Two checks that cost nothing

  1. Check for pocket change and loose items Coins, buttons, and underwire can rattle around inside the drum or get caught between the drum and cabinet. Open the door and check the drum, the lint trap housing, and the floor around the machine for anything that fell out.
  2. Check the load and the feet An unbalanced load of one or two heavy items, like a comforter or sneakers, can bang against the drum — try a normal mixed load instead. Also check that all four feet are on the floor and the machine isn't rocking; an unlevel dryer turns any small vibration into a bang.
  3. Listen for when the noise happens A noise only while the drum is turning points at a roller, belt, or bearing. A noise that's constant, or that changes with the blower or exhaust, points at the blower wheel or motor instead. Narrowing it down before you open anything saves a wasted teardown.

Check each cause, easiest first

Ordered by how hard each is to check, not by how likely it is — so the cheap answers get ruled out before you open anything. The badge on each row shows where the smart money is. Percentages are share of repair-video attention, not a measured failure rate.

How to check. With the belt off, spin the idler pulley by hand and listen for grinding, and check that its spring still holds tension against the belt.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

How to check. Open the cabinet and spin each roller by hand. Look for flat spots, cracked plastic, or a wobble at the axle.

A flat-spotted or seized roller is one of the most common sources of a rhythmic thumping that speeds up and slows with the drum's rotation.

How to check. Open the cabinet and look at the belt for cracks, fraying, or slack, and check whether it's still seated on the motor pulley and drum. Spin the drum by hand — one that turns with no resistance and no motor connection tells you the belt is off or broken.

A broken or off-track belt is the most common reason the motor runs but the drum doesn't turn.

How to check. With the machine unplugged, reach in and spin the blower wheel by hand. Listen for scraping and feel for wobble or looseness where it mounts to the motor shaft, and check for lint packed around it.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

A cracked hub or debris caught in the fins is a common source of a rattling or grinding noise, and a wheel that's loose on the shaft gets worse over time, not better. A packed wheel also restricts airflow, which can affect heat as well as noise.

How to check. Listen for a hum when you try to start the dryer. A hum with no drum movement points at a seized motor or a jam elsewhere in the drive system; total silence points upstream, to the switch, timer, or thermal fuse, before the motor itself. Test winding continuity with a multimeter.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

No continuity, or a motor that's hot to the touch and has thermally tripped, means the motor has failed — check the belt, rollers, and switch first, since those fail more often than the motor itself.

How to check. With the drum accessible, rock it gently side to side at the point where it rides on the rear support, and turn it slowly by hand listening for a high-pitched squeal.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

Play at the mount or a persistent squeal means the bearing is worn. It gets louder over time rather than better, and left long enough it can score the rear drum shaft too.

Can the manufacturer refuse to sell you this part? It depends on your state.

If a drum bearing turns out to be your fault, you may need an official part. Whether a manufacturer has to sell you one is state law, not company policy — and it is not uniform.

CaliforniacoveredSB-244 names major appliances explicitly. Parts, tools and documentation must be offered on fair terms — 7 years for parts wholesaling at $100+.
ColoradocoveredHB24-1121's 14-item exclusion list omits appliances, so they are covered. Includes a parts-pairing ban.
OregoncoveredAppliances are not excluded from Oregon's right-to-repair statute.
Minnesotalikely coveredAppliances are not named as excluded and the definition is broad, but the statute does not name them either — read as covered, not confirmed.
New YorkexcludedHome appliances are carved out BY NAME from the Digital Fair Repair Act. A manufacturer is not required to sell you this part.
TexasexcludedAppliances are explicitly excluded from the state's repair statute.

Enforcement is by the state Attorney General in every state confirmed — none of these laws gives you a personal right to sue. Sourced from primary statute text; see our right-to-repair notes for citations.

Is it worth fixing at all?

Most pages answer this with the “50% rule” — spend no more than half a replacement's price. We went looking for the origin of that number and could not find one: it is widely credited to ENERGY STAR, whose actual published guidance is an age-and-condition checklist with no percentage in it. We use your machine's own measured running cost instead. We hold it for 98 GE dryer models.

If the maths says replace it

We rank every dryer we hold certification data for within its own size and configuration class — so you are comparing machines that would actually fit the same space. See the dryer rankings →

When to stop and call someone

If you smell gas, stop now

Leave the appliance alone, ventilate, and call the gas utility. Nothing on this page is worth doing around a suspected leak.

Sealed-system work

Compressor and refrigerant repairs need EPA certification — that is a legal requirement, not a difficulty rating. A service call runs roughly $75–$150 before parts, so read the repair-or-replace maths above before booking.

Common questions

Where do these rankings come from?

Share of repair-video views for this symptom across 382 videos. The walkthroughs shown on this page come from AppliancePartsPros and RepairClinic.com. It measures what people watch. That correlates with what fails, but video age, channel size and search visibility all influence it, so we publish it as attention and never as a failure rate. Each cause shows the video count and total views behind its percentage.

Will the part fit my model?

We only show a part when it comes from a repair on a machine in the same GE family. Where we have no family-matched part we say so rather than substitute another brand's. For parts confirmed on one exact machine, use the model page above.

Is aftermarket as good as OEM?

Usually yes for simple mechanical parts like belts, fuses and thermostats; less reliably for control boards and sensors, where tolerances and firmware matter. Every listing is labelled.

Know your model number?

These GE dryers have a fully verified repair page — every failure sourced, every part confirmed on that exact machine, rather than matched at family level as above.
