LG Refrigerator Noisy: 6 Causes, Ranked

Ice Maker

A whole assembly is rarely needed — check the inlet valve and fill tube first.

Two checks cost nothing — do those first.

⚠ Unplug the fridge before opening any panel. The sealed system (compressor, refrigerant lines) is not DIY — that work needs EPA certification.

Two checks that cost nothing

  1. Find out where the noise is Open the freezer door while the sound is happening. If it stops right away, the noise is coming from inside the freezer compartment. If it keeps going, pull the fridge out and listen near the bottom back, where the compressor and its fan live.
  2. Listen for what kind of sound it is A steady hum or buzz that's louder than normal often points at a fan motor or a small electrical part warming up. A clicking that repeats on a cycle is usually a timer advancing. Grinding or scraping means something is physically rubbing.
  3. Check for ice or debris on a fan Pull out the freezer bins and look at the back wall panel — built-up frost pressing against it can make the fan blade behind it scrape with every rotation. Clearing the ice, if it's there, costs nothing and is the most common fix for a grinding sound.

Check each cause, easiest first

Ordered by how hard each is to check, not by how likely it is — so the cheap answers get ruled out before you open anything. The badge on each row shows where the smart money is. Percentages are share of repair-video attention, not a measured failure rate.

How to check. Unplug it from the compressor and shake it. A rattle means the internals have failed. Also check for a burnt smell.

Rattles or smells burnt = the compressor can't start, which reads exactly like a dead fridge but is a cheap part.

How to check. Pull the fridge out, locate the fan near the compressor at the back or bottom, and spin the blade by hand — it should turn freely with no scraping or resistance.

Stiff, silent when powered, or grinding = the fan motor or blade is the problem — a blade dragging on built-up dust can look like a dead motor when it's really just clogged.

How to check. Advance it manually and listen for the compressor to cut out and the heater to come on.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

No change = the timer isn't cycling into defrost.

How to check. With the fridge unplugged, look first for a bulging or burst top, then test the capacitor's value against its rating.

Bulging, leaking, or out of range = replace it. Capacitors fail suddenly and are cheap, so it's worth ruling this out before condemning a fan motor or the compressor.

Is it worth fixing at all?

Most pages answer this with the “50% rule” — spend no more than half a replacement's price. We went looking for the origin of that number and could not find one: it is widely credited to ENERGY STAR, whose actual published guidance is an age-and-condition checklist with no percentage in it. We use your machine's own measured running cost instead. We hold it for 268 LG refrigerator models.

If the maths says replace it

We rank every refrigerator we hold certification data for within its own size and configuration class — so you are comparing machines that would actually fit the same space. See the refrigerator rankings →

When to stop and call someone

If you smell gas, stop now

Leave the appliance alone, ventilate, and call the gas utility. Nothing on this page is worth doing around a suspected leak.

Sealed-system work

Compressor and refrigerant repairs need EPA certification — that is a legal requirement, not a difficulty rating. A service call runs roughly $75–$150 before parts, so read the repair-or-replace maths above before booking.

Common questions

Where do these rankings come from?

Share of repair-video views for this symptom across 492 videos. The walkthroughs shown on this page come from AppliancePartsPros and RepairClinic.com. It measures what people watch. That correlates with what fails, but video age, channel size and search visibility all influence it, so we publish it as attention and never as a failure rate. Each cause shows the video count and total views behind its percentage.

Will the part fit my model?

We only show a part when it comes from a repair on a machine in the same LG family. Where we have no family-matched part we say so rather than substitute another brand's. For parts confirmed on one exact machine, use the model page above.

Is aftermarket as good as OEM?

Usually yes for simple mechanical parts like belts, fuses and thermostats; less reliably for control boards and sensors, where tolerances and firmware matter. Every listing is labelled.

Know your model number?

These LG refrigerators have a fully verified repair page — every failure sourced, every part confirmed on that exact machine, rather than matched at family level as above.
