Two checks that cost nothing
- Confirm it's getting power Check that the cord is fully plugged in, and if the outlet is a GFCI type — common on kitchen counters near a fridge — press its reset button. Then check the breaker panel. A tripped GFCI outlet is a surprisingly common reason a fridge looks completely dead.
- Listen closely for any sound Put your ear near the back of the fridge and listen for even a faint hum, click, or buzz, especially right after you plug it back in. A hum that starts and then cuts out points at a different problem than total silence, which usually means power isn't reaching the machine at all.
- Check the door switch by hand Open the door and press the small switch near the hinge in by hand — the interior light should turn off. A switch stuck in the released position can, on some models, make the control think the door is open and hold the fridge in a paused state.
