Two checks that cost nothing
- Is the compressor running? Put a hand on the black cylinder at the back bottom. Warm and humming = it's running, so the fault is airflow or defrost. Silent and cold = it isn't starting, which points at the start relay.
- Clean the condenser coils If they're packed with dust the machine can't shed heat and will run warm. Free, and it fixes a meaningful share of cases.
- Check the freezer separately Freezer cold but fridge warm is an airflow or damper fault, not a sealed-system failure — and that's the cheap outcome.

How to check. Pull the fridge out, locate the fan near the compressor at the back or bottom, and spin the blade by hand — it should turn freely with no scraping or resistance.
Stiff, silent when powered, or grinding = the fan motor or blade is the problem — a blade dragging on built-up dust can look like a dead motor when it's really just clogged.

How to check. Unplug it from the compressor and shake it. A rattle means the internals have failed. Also check for a burnt smell.
Rattles or smells burnt = the compressor can't start, which reads exactly like a dead fridge but is a cheap part.
