Samsung Refrigerator Not Cooling: What Fails, What the Part Costs, and When to Stop

6 Samsung french-door repair files · 504 community comments · 96 Samsung refrigerators in our catalogue · Samsung's own troubleshooting read in full

Run Samsung's free checks first: a display reading OF OF is demo mode (the button sequence is below), a changed setpoint takes up to 28 hours to land, and a door seal that fails the dollar-bill test needs a new seal. If the freezer is cold and the fridge is warm, the fault is almost always in the freezer's back wall: an evaporator fan that has stopped, or ice from a failed defrost sensor or heater. If both sides are warm and the back of the fridge is hot, it is the condenser fan or dirty coils. Both sides warm with a silent compressor is the one path that ends in a technician, and on a unit under five years old the sealed system is still under Samsung's warranty.

Evaporator fan or ice on the evaporator

evaporator fan · defrost sensor · defrost heater

No fan noise from the freezer means the fan. A sheet of frost on the freezer's back wall means the defrost system; a thaw or forced defrost restores cooling for hours to days, then it fails again, which is the tell.

  3. Both sides warm

Condenser fan and coils, then the sealed system

condenser fan · coils $0 · sealed system: technician

Pull the fridge out. A fan that does not spin or coils packed with dust are the cheap fixes. A running compressor with clean coils and a working fan means refrigerant, which needs an EPA-certified technician; under five years, Samsung's sealed-system warranty covers it.

01 / What this page adds

Seven numbers from the record

Three come from sources we read and link; four are computed from our own files, which are downloadable at the end of the page.

  1. 7 of 7

Every one of the seven appliance-repair companies Prudent Reviews interviewed named Samsung among the least reliable refrigerator brands; the reasons they give are repeat service and parts that are hard to get, and one of them says most service companies will not work on the brand. 8

Prudent Reviews' 2026 reliability roundup, seven named service companies. The same page reports Yale Appliance's service-call rate for Samsung at 20.9% in 2021 and 8.4% in 2022, warns that the 2022 figure looks better than it was because Yale sold few Samsungs that year, and says Yale dropped the brand in 2023.

  2. 100s

Consumer Reports records that Samsung refrigerators were cited in hundreds of complaints to the Consumer Product Safety Commission for malfunctioning ice makers and temperatures that were too warm, many of them French-door models. 9

CR's brand-reliability page, paywalled past the summary; the complaint count is CR's word. The CPSC recall database itself holds no Samsung refrigerator recall as of 2026-09-13: the complaints did not become a recall.

  3. 28 h

Samsung's own figure for how long a changed setpoint takes to arrive, and four hours for the display to show it. A fridge that reads warm the morning after a setting change is not yet broken. 1

Samsung's troubleshooting page, which lists 13 causes before mechanical failure: recent setting change, clearance, blocked vents, understocking, setpoint, room too hot or below 55°F, dirty seals, failed seals, demo mode, no power, a compartment set to Off, hot food, frequent opening. Twelve of the fourteen cost nothing to fix.

  4. 24%

24% of 504 Reddit comments about Samsung fridges describe ice on the evaporator or a defrost failure; 26% mention the compressor or sealed system, 12% a fan. The recurring first-person story is a forced defrost that restores cooling for hours or days, then fails again.

Counted over comments and posts in threads whose title names a Samsung fridge, or that name Samsung and a fridge term themselves, from 217 harvested threads (r/appliancerepair, r/Appliances, r/samsung, and 17 threads from r/Frugal). Keyword themes; a comment can match several. Method and limits in the field-reports section.

  5. 12 parts

The parts that stop a Samsung fridge cooling are matched to Amazon listings by part number, from the defrost sensor DA32-10105X (compatible) to the main board DA92-01199G. The two most-blamed parts, the evaporator fan and the defrost sensor, are among the low-cost ones. 14

Amazon Creators API search on twelve part numbers, keeping listings whose title carries the number; genuine and compatible listed separately in the decode table. The compressor and sealed system are not listed: Repair Me Yourself puts a compressor at $400–800 installed and a refrigerant repair at $300–600 plus a $100–200 diagnosis.

  6. 5 of 5

The condenser fan is a not-cooling candidate on every Samsung french-door repair file in our corpus that carries the symptom (5 of 5; DA97-20025A is the number on four of them, the RF261 uses another); the evaporator fan and control board on 3, the thermistor and damper on 2. The defrost heater appears in the failures list of all 6 files. 12

Our repair corpus: six Samsung french-door model files (RF261, RF27T ×3, RF28T ×2) built from vendor repair videos and parts catalogues, each with a symptom index and a parts list. The files are family-level: none of the six model numbers is in our product catalogue, so the page speaks to the family, not to your exact model.

  7. $122/yr

The median Samsung refrigerator in our catalogue costs $121.92 a year to run against $69.48 for all 9,326 refrigerators, because Samsung's certified line skews to large french-door units. The cheapest-to-run published Samsung is the RT18DG6300** top-freezer at $62.70; the replacement our corpus recommends for the RF27/RF28 family is a 30 cu ft RF30BB6600 at $130.87 a year. 13

annual_cost_usd on 122 Samsung refrigerator records (96 published) and 9,326 refrigerators, at the catalogue's own annual_cost_usd (EIA national residential rate). The number matters for the fix-or-replace arithmetic below: a low-cost fan against a new fridge is not a close call, and a $600 sealed-system repair on a ten-year-old unit is.

Samsung freezer works but fridge not cooling: why, and what to check

A Samsung french-door fridge has one evaporator, in the freezer's back wall. Cold air reaches the fresh-food side only because a fan pushes it there and a damper lets it through. Three things stop that: the fan fails, the damper sticks, or the evaporator ices over because the defrost heater or its sensor failed and the coil never clears. All three leave the freezer cold and the fridge warm, which is why the first look is behind the freezer's back panel and not at the compressor. howtofixit's three-way read of that panel: loud grinding or chirping is ice on the fan; silence with a cold back panel is a seized motor; silence with a warm back panel is a defrost failure.

An apartment-maintenance worker in an any-brand r/appliancerepair thread, outside the Samsung count: "The #1 issue I find is the evaporator fan. If the issue is 'freezer works, fridge is warm,' I just throw a new motor on the cart and off I go... In a typical (top freezer) set up this fan is in the back of the freezer." On a Samsung french-door it is behind the freezer's back panel. 15

04 / By symptom

What you see, and what it usually is

Match the symptom, not the part. Each row names the parts in the order the guides and the community check them.

  • DIY part Freezer cold, fridge warm, freezer fan silent — Evaporator fan. Our corpus names it on 3 of 5 files, howtofixit and Appliance Analysts both reach it, and the any-brand rule of thumb from an apartment-maintenance worker on r/appliancerepair is to replace it first. Thirty minutes and a low-cost part. 5
  • DIY part Freezer cold, fridge warm, frost on the freezer's back wall — Defrost failure: sensor, heater, or the board's defrost control. The forced-defrost-then-it-comes-back story is the most repeated first-person report in the Samsung harvest. Thaw fully, test the sensor and heater, replace the one that fails. 5
  • DIY part Fridge warm, freezer fine, fan running, no frost — Damper. The motorized door between the compartments; it is on two RF27T files in our corpus and it fails silently. 12
  • DIY first, then a technician Both sides warm, compressor running, cabinet hot at the back — Condenser fan or coils packed with dust; if both are fine, low refrigerant. The fan and the coils are DIY; the refrigerant is not (Repair Me Yourself: $300–600 plus $100–200 diagnosis). 7
  • DIY first, then a technician Both sides warm, compressor silent or clicking — Power and demo mode first (Samsung's list), then the start relay, then the inverter board, then the compressor. The relay is a DIY swap; the rest is a technician, and on a young unit the compressor is under Samsung's ten-year warranty. 1
  • DIY first, then a technician Temperatures swing or the display disagrees with a thermometer — A thermistor before a board. Samsung's own advice is a thermometer in a glass of water mid-shelf, eight hours undisturbed, because the display shows a compartment average and the back and bottom always read colder. 2
  • Not a fault Warm the morning after you changed a setting, a power outage, a move, or a big shop — Not a fault yet. Four hours for the display, up to 28 for the compartment; hot food and a full door add hours. After a move, howtofixit's rule is three hours unplugged before power-on so the compressor oil settles, then 24–48 hours to temperature. Samsung's list also has demo mode, a compartment set to Off on top-freezer models, and a room below 55°F. 1

By what the display shows, and the two button sequences

OF OF, O FF, OFF OFF, or scrolling bars: Cooling Off (demo) mode
Samsung's own sequence: touch and hold Button 1 and Button 2 (numbered on Samsung's page) until a chime; if that fails, Buttons 1, 2 and 4. Family Hub: Apps › Fridge Manager › Fridge Settings › Cooling Off › Deactivate. Bespoke: hold < and > for six seconds, then press O. Convertible models: Temp., Power Freeze and Lock together until the chime. 3
Forced defrost (Fd), as a diagnostic
howtofixit's sequences by panel type: Freezer + Lighting (type A), Energy Saver + Fridge (B), Freezer + Fridge on touchscreens (C), Fridge + Freezer or Power Cool + Power Freeze on internal-control panels (D). Hold both 8 to 12 seconds until the display blanks or flashes, then tap any other button until Fd shows; the cycle runs 20–30 minutes with the beeper on. Exit by unplugging for 30 seconds or repeating the combination. If cooling returns and fails again within days, the defrost system is the answer. 5
A temperature that does not match a thermometer
Samsung's display averages the compartment. A glass of water mid-shelf, eight hours with the doors shut, is the reading to trust; if it is still warm 28 hours after lowering the setpoint, start the checks above. 2
A blinking LED on the inverter board at the back
howtofixit's table: steady on, normal (suspect the compressor or refrigerant); 1 flash, start failure (seized compressor or relay); 2 flashes, IPM overcurrent (failing compressor motor); 3 flashes, low DC-link voltage (outlet or loose wire); 5 flashes, under-voltage (inverter board); off, no power to the inverter. Separately, our corpus carries display codes 81–84 as inverter faults at brand level, unverified against a manual. Treat either as a pointer, not a verdict. 5
No lights at all
Power: outlet, breaker, cord. Samsung notes the interior light should come on when the door opens unless Sabbath mode is set. 1

05 / The routine

Diagnose in this order

Free checks, then the freezer's back wall, then the back of the fridge, then stop. Unplug before opening any panel. The sealed system is not a DIY job.

  1. Minute 0 Read the display, then the setpoint. OF OF is demo mode (sequence above). Set 38°F and −2°F. If you changed a setting in the last day, wait: four hours for the display, up to 28 for the compartment. Check the interior light comes on and the breaker is up.
  2. Minute 5 Seals, clearance, vents, load. Dollar-bill test on every door. Two inches behind, above and beside. Nothing blocking the vents inside. At least two-thirds stocked. Samsung's list runs 14 items; these are the ones a warm fridge usually fails.
  3. Minute 15 Listen at the freezer. Hold the door switch in, or hold a magnet over the door sensor, and wait 30 seconds. Compressor humming? Fan running in the back wall? A silent fan with a running compressor is the evaporator fan (howtofixit: most Samsung fans run on 7–12 V DC; 10 V at the harness and no spin is a dead motor). A running fan with frost showing through the panel, or a grinding fan, is the defrost system.
  4. Hour 1 Open the freezer's back panel. A solid sheet of ice means defrost failure: thaw it fully (24 hours unplugged, doors open, towels down, or a forced defrost), then test the defrost sensor and the heater before buying either. A dry evaporator with a dead fan means the fan.
  5. Hour 2 Pull the fridge out. Condenser fan spinning? Coils clean? Vacuum them regardless. If both compartments are warm with a running compressor, a working condenser fan and clean coils, stop here: the sealed system is a technician's diagnosis. howtofixit's compressor check for the brave: the three pins should read near-identical resistance (about 6–10 Ω); an open pair is a dead compressor.
  6. Stop Compressor, refrigerant, or a board with no sensor fault. Under five years, Samsung's sealed-system warranty; under ten, the compressor's, as reported by Prudent Reviews. Past that, the cost table below has the professional figures, and the fix-or-replace call is the next section.
The tell that it is the defrost system An owner in the Samsung harvest with an RF20 puts it exactly: force a defrost and the fridge goes cold again for about eight hours. If a thaw fixes it and the fault returns in days, buy the sensor and the heater, not a new fan. 15

06 / What to expect

What it costs: fix or replace

Every repair cost on this page against the two numbers that decide it: the running cost of the fridge you have (our catalogue's median Samsung is $121.92 a year) and the running cost of the replacement our corpus recommends for the RF27/RF28 family, a 30 cu ft RF30BB6600 at $130.87 a year.

  1. $0 Samsung's checks, a thaw, a coil cleaning. Twelve of Samsung's 14 causes cost nothing. A 24-hour thaw and a vacuumed condenser fix more warm fridges than any part; if that is the fix and it holds, the fridge was never broken. 1
  2. Low-cost parts Defrost sensor, thermistor, evaporator fan, condenser fan, damper. The five low-cost parts, each a one-hour job with a nut driver and a multimeter. Against a new fridge none of them is a decision; the only cost is the diagnosis. Repair Me Yourself's professional figure for the evaporator fan alone is $200–350 installed. 14
  3. Mid-cost part The defrost heater. The heater has a compatible and a genuine listing; the genuine one costs more. Add the sensor above. Repair Me Yourself puts a professional defrost repair at $200–400 including labor. 7
  4. Higher-cost parts Start relay, main board. The relay (DA35-00135A) is a swap. The main board (DA92-01199G; Repair Me Yourself: $200–400 installed) is where the money goes when the sensors were not tested first: a DIYer in an any-brand r/appliancerepair thread, outside the Samsung count paid $230 for a board plus two thermistors and a fan on a seven-year-old fridge and it worked. Rule on this page: under seven years the board is worth it; seven to ten, fix anything under the board; over ten, a sealed-system quote is a replacement quote. 15
  5. $400–800 Compressor or sealed system, professional. Repair Me Yourself: compressor $400–800 including labor, refrigerant leak $300–600 plus $100–200 diagnosis. A technician in an any-brand r/appliancerepair thread, outside the Samsung count (21 points): "repairing refrigerant issues on fridges usually isn't worth it. In my area; that repair would be $600; and a new economy fridge is about the same." Inside Samsung's five-year sealed-system or ten-year compressor warranty the parts are covered; outside it, this is where replacement wins on a fridge over ten years old. 7
  6. $131/yr Replace: what the catalogue says it costs to run. The RF30BB6600 the corpus recommends runs $130.87 a year, about the same as the $122 median of the Samsung fridges we track, so a new Samsung does not pay for itself in electricity; and one RF30BB6600 owner in the harvest reports a cooling fault of their own (freezer warm, fridge fine), so it is a like-for-like replacement, not an escape from the brand. The cheapest-to-run published Samsung, the RT18DG6300** top-freezer, is $62.70 a year: a different fridge, not a cheaper version of yours. 13
The rule we could not source The 50% rule (replace when the repair costs half the price of a new unit) appears on many pages and on none with an origin. Use the repair costs above and your unit's age: under five years, fix everything (the warranty pays for the expensive part); under seven years the board is worth it; seven to ten, fix anything under the board; over ten, a sealed-system quote is a replacement quote.

07 / The parts

Six parts, one per symptom

We did not fit these parts; see the method note.

Each part is the one the corpus files, the guides and the community name for that symptom, matched to Amazon listings by part number. Where a genuine Samsung listing exists, the card and the decode table say so.

  1. Freezer cold, fridge warm, no fan noise from the freezer

    Evaporator fan motor DA31-00287B

    DA31-00287B · 30-minute job · nut driver

The fan that moves freezer air into the fresh-food side. When it fails the freezer stays cold and the fridge warms. DA31-00287B is the number on the RF27T5501SRAA51 and RF28T5001SR files in our corpus (the evaporator fan is a not-cooling candidate on 3 of the 5 indexes; the RF261 uses DA81-06013A); howtofixit lists it as the DC-motor fan for current models.

The older RF261 file uses DA81-06013A (about $15–20 per howtofixit), and DA31-00146E is the fan in our brand-level failure profile, used on RS and RFG models. Match yours to the model's parts diagram before ordering.

  2. Ice on the back wall of the freezer, fridge warms every few days or weeks

    Defrost heater DA47-00244U

    DA47-00244U · 1–2 hours · thaw first

The defrost system is the Samsung-specific story: when the heater or its sensor fails, frost blocks the evaporator and airflow stops. The community's forced-defrost fix (cold again for about eight hours, then warm) is the signature. Test continuity before buying; the sensor below is the cheaper suspect.

The compatible listing costs less than the genuine Samsung listing. DA47-00244U is on the RF261 file and in howtofixit's guide; the RF27T/RF28T files carry DA47-00526B. The right one depends on the evaporator in your model.

    Check price on Amazon

  3. Same ice-up symptom, cheaper suspect first

    Defrost sensor DA32-10105X

    DA32-10105X · 30 minutes · multimeter

The defrost sensor tells the board when the evaporator is cold enough to run the heater. A failed sensor produces the same ice-up as a failed heater at a fraction of the price, which is why every guide that tests before it buys checks this one first.

Resistance changes with temperature. iFixit's figure is generic (10–15 kΩ at 46°F or colder); Samsung publishes none for DA32-10105X, so a reading that does not move with temperature is the reliable failure sign. DA32-10105X is the number on the RF261 file; DA32-00006S is an older-generation sensor, in the decode table for completeness.

  4. Both compartments warm, compressor running, back of the fridge hot

    Condenser fan motor DA97-20025A

    DA97-20025A · 45 minutes · pull the fridge out

The fan that cools the compressor and condenser coils. The condenser fan is a not-cooling candidate on all 5 Samsung french-door files in our corpus that carry the symptom; DA97-20025A is the number on 4 of them (the RF261 uses a different one). One owner in the community found it not spinning and replaced it.

Clean the coils while the fridge is out; a dirty condenser produces the same symptom for free. If the fan spins, the coils are clean and both sides are still warm, the sealed system is next and that is not a DIY job (see the cost table).

  5. Temperatures swing, cycles wrong, board suspected

    Thermistor DA32-10104N

    DA32-10104N · 20 minutes · multimeter

The cheapest part on the page and the one to rule out before a control board. A sensor that reads wrong makes the board run the compressor and fans wrong; the corpus lists it on 2 of 5 files.

If the sensors test fine and the fans run, the main board (DA92-01199G) is the next suspect. Rule of thumb on this page: under seven years the board is worth it; seven to ten, fix anything under the board; over ten, a sealed-system quote is a replacement quote.

  6. Fridge side warm, freezer fine, fan running, no ice on the wall

    Damper DA31-00043E

    DA31-00043E · 1 hour · behind the fresh-food back panel

The motorized door that meters cold air from the freezer into the fresh-food side. Stuck shut, the fridge warms while everything else runs; it is on 2 of 5 corpus files (RF27T5201SR, RF27T5501SRAA51) and is the fault the fan test does not catch.

Listen for the damper clicking when you change the fridge setpoint. Silence with a running evaporator fan points here.

20.9% → 8.4%2021 and 2022, as reported by Prudent Reviews, which warns the 2022 figure flatters (Yale sold few Samsungs that year) and says Yale dropped the brand in 2023 8
CPSC complaints on ice makers and warm temperatures
100sof complaints, in Consumer Reports' description, many involving French-door models; no CPSC recall of a Samsung refrigerator exists 9
Ice-maker class action, Bianchi v. Samsung (D.N.J.)
2017→2024filed and dismissed; French-door models with in-door ice makers; dismissed January 11, 2024 after individual settlement offers, no class payout 10
Samsung refrigerator warranty
5 & 10years on the sealed system and the compressor respectively, one year parts and labor, as reported by Prudent Reviews 8
  • Press A few years ago, Samsung refrigerators were cited in hundreds of complaints to the Consumer Product Safety Commission for malfunctioning icemakers and temperatures that were too warm, leading to spoiled food. 9
  • Litigation The proposed class action lawsuit filed in 2017 over allegedly defective Samsung ice makers has been dismissed, and certain consumers have accepted individual settlement offers from the company. 10
  • Service company We tend to see the lowest service call rates on Bosch, GE and KitchenAid French door fridges, and the highest on Samsung, LG, and Frigidaire. 8
  • Community I do warranty service for Samsung. Let me put it this way, I will never run out of work as long as Samsung keeps producing fridges. If its not the icemaker, the sealed system leaks. 15
What to do with that The litigation was about the in-door ice maker, not cooling, and it ended without a class payout; there is no recall to claim under. It changes the stop rule, not the diagnosis. The cheap parts are the same on a Samsung as on anything else; the reason to stop earlier is that a sealed-system repair on this brand is harder to get done, because the repair companies say they avoid it. Inside the five- and ten-year warranties, make Samsung do it.

The not-cooling parts, by part number

Amazon Creators API listings, matched by part number. Genuine = the listing title says Genuine or OEM and does not say compatible, replacement, upgraded or premium; everything else is listed as compatible, including listings that only name Samsung.

Twelve part numbers from our Samsung french-door repair files, the brand failure profile and the guides we read, matched to Amazon listings by number. The table shows whether a genuine listing was found and which corpus model files carry the part.

  • 4 of 12 part numbers have a listing that describes itself as genuine or OEM; all 12 have a compatible listing. Where both exist the genuine part costs more than the compatible one.
  • The three parts behind most freezer-cold, fridge-warm cases (evaporator fan, defrost sensor, damper) are all low-cost as compatible parts; only the sensor has a genuine listing. The two that resolve both-sides-warm without a technician are the condenser fan and the start relay.
  • Our corpus carries two evaporator-fan numbers and two defrost-heater numbers across the six model files: the RF27T/RF28T families use DA31-00287B and DA47-00526B, the RF261 uses DA81-06013A and DA47-00244U. DA31-00146E is the fan in the brand-level failure profile and DA32-00006S is an older sensor from the guides. A part number is a fitment claim; the model's parts diagram is the check.
  • The main board (DA92-01199G) is the only cooling part the guides rate as a technician's job. The ice maker assembly (compatible and genuine listings) is in the table because it is the part the community names most, not because it stops cooling.
  • None of the twelve is the compressor or a sealed-system part: both need EPA certification to replace and neither is sold as a DIY part on Amazon by part number in a way we could verify.

Genuine listing found means a listing described itself as genuine or OEM and named the part number. Corpus files = how many of the six Samsung french-door model files list the part (0 for parts that come from the brand failure profile or the guides); the condenser fan is named on five files, under DA97-20025A on four. DIY as the guides rate it; the sealed system is never DIY.

Where they agree

  • Free checks first. Samsung, iFixit and Appliance Analysts all put settings, power, seals and clearance ahead of any part, and Samsung's 28-hour figure is the one number every warm-fridge report should be measured against.
  • Freezer cold and fridge warm points at the freezer's back wall: the evaporator fan or ice on the evaporator. Every source that reaches the parts stage agrees; they differ only on which of the two to check first.
  • The sealed system is the end of the DIY road. Every guide says so; Repair Me Yourself prices a refrigerant repair at $300–600 plus diagnosis, and the technician quoted in the cost table puts it at about $600 against a new economy fridge at about the same.
  • No source gives a failure rate. Our corpus counts repair-video attention, Yale counts service calls per unit sold (and stopped reporting Samsung after 2022), CR counts complaints. The page uses each for what it is.

Where they split

  • Fan first, or defrost first? — Appliance Analysts: the fans, after the free checks (Samsung's own list stops at 'mechanical failure' without naming a part). howtofixit: the frosted evaporator and the defrost heater, first. Repair Me Yourself: coils, then the evaporator fan, then the defrost system. The community: the defrost story is the most repeated, the fan the most often fixed. Both are behind the same panel and the freezer tells you which: a silent fan is the fan, a sheet of ice is the defrost system. Our corpus lists the fan under not cooling and the heater under frost buildup, which is the same split in different words.
  • How bad is Samsung? — Prudent Reviews' seven repair companies: least reliable, avoid. Yale's own numbers, as reported: 20.9% then 8.4%, then no data. Consumer Reports: hundreds of CPSC complaints, poor predicted reliability on French-door models. Owners in the harvest: split between "piece of trash" and a Bespoke that has been fine. The service-company view is about parts and training as much as failure; the one hard series (Yale) is two points, the second of which Prudent Reviews itself says was flattered by low sales, and it ends there. The CPSC complaints are real and did not become a recall. Treat the brand as harder to get fixed, not as impossible to fix.
  • Is a $200 board worth it? — Repair Me Yourself: control board $200–400 installed, thermistor $20–50 for the part. A DIYer in an any-brand thread: $230 board plus two thermistors and a fan on a seven-year-old fridge, and it worked. iFixit: rule everything else out first. On a unit under seven years a board is a fraction of the cost of a new fridge. The risk is buying the board when the fault was a low-cost sensor, which is why every guide tests the sensors first. Rule on this page: under seven years the board is worth it; seven to ten, fix anything under the board; over ten, a sealed-system quote is a replacement quote.

What 504 Samsung fridge comments say

504 comments about a Samsung fridge · from 217 threads · r/appliancerepair, r/Appliances, r/samsung, r/Frugal · Mar 2015 – Sep 2026

We harvested the top-voted threads for eight Samsung-refrigerator queries on r/appliancerepair, r/Appliances, r/samsung and r/Frugal and kept every comment or post about a Samsung fridge: 504 in all from 217 threads. The shares are the proportion of those comments that raise each theme; a comment can raise more than one. Each quote is a top-voted first-person comment for that theme, from the Samsung set.

Share of comments about a Samsung fridge that raise each theme

  1. Compressor, sealed system, refrigerant 26% · 129 comments

“I do warranty service for Samsung. Let me put it this way, I will never run out of work as long as Samsung keeps producing fridges. If its not the icemaker, the sealed system leaks.”

The most-raised theme and the end of most threads: a warranty technician's summary is that if it is not the ice maker it is the sealed system, and owners who reach a refrigerant quote replace the fridge.

  2. Repair or replace, cost 25% · 124 comments

“My Samsung fridge is a piece of trash and needs replacement. Any recommendations?. The thing repeatedly ices over after replacing just about everything. I’m over it. It’s 5 years old. Any recommendations for a replacement? Trying to keep it around the 1k mark. I’d rather not have an iPad on the door.”

A quarter of comments are the replace decision, and the ones that decide to replace are usually on their second or third repair of the same unit.

  3. Ice on the evaporator, defrost failure 24% · 119 comments

“UPDATE - the full defrost and 24 hours at room temp worked! Whatever was frozen over is unfrozen and fridge is at the set (37 degree) temp like it should be. Whoot-whoot! Thank you to those who replied. I am so haply to NOT have to purchase a new fridge!”

The Samsung signature in first person: a forced defrost or a 24-hour thaw restores cooling, then it returns. The owners who tested the sensor and heater fixed it; the ones who did not are back in a month.

  4. Technician, service call, warranty 20% · 101 comments

“Update #2: tech visited. Told me samsung diagnoses remotely and won't accept recommendations. He just replaced main board and freezer fan assembly pero samsung instructions and told me to wait 48 hrs to see if the problem was fixed.”

Samsung's remote diagnosis and dealer-only training come up as often as the repair itself: technicians waiting on parts, or replacing the board and fan on Samsung's instruction and asking the owner to wait 48 hours.

  5. Control board, sensor, thermistor, damper 16% · 81 comments

“Yes. I was just looking at the pcb board and it has a single led blinking once. It says that nlune the compressor could be bad or the pcb board. While I was sitting there looking at it and trying to figure out how to test the pcb. An electrode of some kind sparked and burned right in front of me. Literally 2 minutes before your comment.”

The board is where the money goes when the sensors were not tested first; the inverter's blinking LED is the clue owners find at the back.

  6. Ice maker problems 14% · 73 comments

“Just dont get one with the icemaker in the fridge area. Thats the trouble area. Ive had my Bespoke from Samsung for a few years now and its been great. The icemaker is in the freezer and works just fine.”

Not a cooling fault, but the same fridge: the in-fridge ice maker is the part owners and warranty technicians name most, and Samsung's newer Bespoke units moved it to the freezer.

  7. Fan (evaporator or condenser) 12% · 60 comments

“Check the fans in the refrigerator and freezer they do shut down when the doors open but I have fixed several Samsung refrigerators and alot of times its the fans”

The cheapest fix in the harvest and the one technicians name first for freezer-cold, fridge-warm; one owner found the condenser fan not spinning and replaced it.

  8. Freezer works, fridge warm 12% · 59 comments

“I let the fridge complete come to room temp over night. Plugged it back in this morning. Freezer is cooling. Fridge is not. I can hear the fan (presumably) running. Not sure how to proceed at this point. Any advice is welcome.”

The symptom as owners phrase it, and the thread that produces the fan-or-defrost answer within a few replies.

  9. Coils, clearance, airflow 11% · 55 comments

“While moving the fridge out from the wall I decided to look for this that you mentioned. I didnt notice anything oily can I send you some pics of what it looks like, the right side is VERY dusty on what looks like a radiator thats C shaped.”

Dust on the condenser and a fridge against the wall; the checks Samsung lists and owners skip.

  10. Avoid Samsung, never again 10% · 49 comments

“Avoid Samsung at all costs. I've had to replace half of my appliances that were Samsung within 5 years, all non repairable. Next to go will be the fridge, for the ice maker problem OP mentions.”

One in ten comments. The reasons match the repair companies': parts, service, and the same failure returning.

  11. Forced defrost, reset, unplug 8% · 39 comments

“Samsung fridge goes warm while the freezer stays cold.. I have a Samsung rf20hfenbsr, the fridge portion is not staying cold while the freezer is. If I put the fridge into forced defrost, it goes cold again for about 8 hours. I've tried cleaning the back, cycling power, checked vents. Any ideas?”

The community's first move, and the diagnostic in disguise: if it works and the fault returns, the defrost system is the answer.

  12. Fixed it myself 7% · 37 comments

“Thanks for the tip. I will look into the seals system warranty. I still have a couple of years left before hitting that mark. In this instance, it seems the compressor fan wasn't spinning and replacing it worked. Thankfully i avoided having to follow through on the Appliance guys advise to replace the control board, for no real benefit.”

Fewer than one in ten comments report a fix; the fixes are the fan, the sensors, and a thaw.

The unit of analysis is a comment or post in a thread whose title names a Samsung fridge, or that itself names Samsung and a fridge term (504 of 2,694 posts and comments harvested); AutoModerator and bot comments are excluded. Themes are keyword matches on the comment's text; a comment can match several. The theme counts and the quotes in this section are from the Samsung set; three anecdotes used elsewhere on the page (the apartment-maintenance worker's fan rule, the $230 board, and the $600 refrigerant figure) are from any-brand r/appliancerepair threads in the same harvest and are labelled as such where they appear. Quotes are trimmed for length and profanity; where a post rather than a comment is quoted, its title is shown before its body; nothing is reworded. Scores are Reddit upvotes at harvest time. The most-upvoted post matching the filter (6,688 points) is a joke about a Family Hub camera, not a repair.

12 / Questions

Frequently asked

Why is my Samsung freezer working but the fridge not cooling?
Because the cold is made in the freezer and moved to the fridge by a fan through a damper. A silent evaporator fan, a sheet of ice on the evaporator from a failed defrost heater or sensor, or a damper stuck shut all leave the freezer cold and the fridge warm. Open the freezer's back panel: a dead fan or a wall of ice tells you which. 512
How long does a Samsung fridge take to get cold after changing the temperature?
Samsung's figures: up to 4 hours for the display to show the new setting and up to 28 hours for the compartment to reach it. Check with a thermometer in a glass of water mid-shelf after eight undisturbed hours; the display is a compartment average and the back and bottom read colder. 12
What does OF OF mean on a Samsung refrigerator, and how do I turn it off?
Cooling Off, the demo mode used on showroom floors. The lights and display work and nothing cools. Samsung's page: touch and hold Buttons 1 and 2 until a chime (or 1, 2 and 4); Family Hub models deactivate it under Apps › Fridge Manager › Fridge Settings › Cooling Off; Bespoke models hold < and > for six seconds, then press O. 31
How do I force a defrost on a Samsung refrigerator, and should I?
As a diagnostic, yes. howtofixit's sequences: hold Freezer + Lighting, Energy Saver + Fridge, Freezer + Fridge (touchscreens), or Fridge + Freezer or Power Cool + Power Freeze (internal-control panels), depending on the panel, for 8 to 12 seconds, then tap another button until Fd shows; the cycle runs 20–30 minutes. Or unplug for 24 hours with the doors open. If cooling comes back and fails again within days, the defrost sensor or heater has failed and a thaw is a bandage. Test them before buying either; the sensor is the cheaper suspect. 54
How much does it cost to fix a Samsung fridge not cooling?
The parts are matched to Amazon listings by part number, from the defrost sensor to the main board; the evaporator fan, the defrost sensor and the condenser fan are the low-cost ones. Check the live price on Amazon. Professional figures from Repair Me Yourself: evaporator fan $200–350 installed, defrost repair $200–400, control board $200–400, compressor $400–800, refrigerant leak $300–600 plus $100–200 diagnosis. 147
Is it worth repairing a Samsung refrigerator?
Under five years, yes for everything: the sealed system is under Samsung's five-year warranty and the compressor under its ten-year one. Then the rule this page uses: under seven years the board is worth it; seven to ten, fix anything under the board; over ten, a sealed-system quote is a replacement quote. A technician on r/appliancerepair puts a refrigerant repair at about $600 in their area and a new economy fridge at about the same. The 50% rule that many pages cite has no source we could find. 815
Are Samsung refrigerators unreliable?
Every one of the seven repair companies Prudent Reviews interviewed named Samsung among the least reliable brands, mostly for repeat service and parts availability; Yale Appliance's service rate for the brand was 20.9% in 2021 and 8.4% in 2022 (a figure Prudent Reviews says was flattered by low sales) before Yale dropped the brand in 2023; Consumer Reports records hundreds of CPSC complaints about ice makers and warm temperatures. There is no CPSC recall. The cheap parts on this page are the same as on any fridge; the difference is how hard the expensive repair is to get done. 89
Was there a recall or lawsuit for Samsung refrigerators?
No recall: the CPSC database holds eight Samsung recalls (ranges, washers, phones, microwaves) and no refrigerator. One lawsuit: Bianchi v. Samsung Electronics America, filed in New Jersey federal court in 2017 over in-door ice makers on French-door models (leaks under the crisper, slush, noise, stuck buckets), dismissed on January 11, 2024 after Samsung made individual settlement offers. There is no class fund to claim from, and the case was about ice, not cooling. 1011
Which part number fits my Samsung fridge?
The numbers on this page come from six french-door repair files (RF261BEAESR, RF27T5201SR, RF27T5501SR, RF27T5501SRAA51, RF28T5001SR, RF28T5021SR): evaporator fan DA31-00287B on the RF27T/RF28T files and DA81-06013A on the RF261, condenser fan DA97-20025A, damper DA31-00043E, thermistor DA32-10104N, defrost sensor DA32-10105X, defrost heater DA47-00244U (RF261) or DA47-00526B (RF27T/RF28T). Check your model's parts diagram before ordering; a listing that names the number is the one to buy. 1214
What do the blinking lights on the back of a Samsung fridge mean?
The inverter board flashes a fault count. howtofixit's table: 1 flash, start failure (seized compressor or bad relay); 2 flashes, IPM overcurrent (failing compressor motor); 3 flashes, low DC-link voltage (outlet or loose wire); 5 flashes, under-voltage (inverter board); steady on is normal. Our corpus separately carries display codes 81–84 as inverter faults, unverified against a service manual. Use either to decide whether to test the sensors or call for the compressor, not as a verdict on its own. 512
Does a dirty condenser coil stop a Samsung fridge cooling?
Yes, and it is the free fix: pull the fridge out and vacuum the coils and the condenser fan. Both compartments warm with a hot cabinet back is the symptom. Repair Me Yourself notes Samsung's own cleaning interval of every 6–12 months. 74
