LG Washer Not Filling: 4 Causes, Ranked

Most-watched cause

Water Inlet Valve

Water reaching the valve but not the tub, combined with a solenoid that fails continuity, means the valve isn't opening. Clean the inlet screens first, since a clogged screen looks identical to a failed valve.

Two checks cost nothing — do those first.

⚠ Unplug the machine and shut off both water valves before opening it. A washer holds water even when the cycle looks finished — expect the drum and hoses to drain when you disconnect them.

Two checks that cost nothing

  1. Check both supply valves are open Follow the hoses behind the machine to the wall valves and confirm both hot and cold are turned fully on. A valve that's been bumped partly closed, or was never reopened after moving the machine, produces exactly this symptom and costs nothing to fix.
  2. Confirm the door or lid is locked Most washers refuse to fill at all unless the door or lid reports locked, as a safety interlock. Close it firmly, listen for the lock engaging, and restart the cycle. If it fills once the lock catches, the fill circuit was never the problem.
  3. Check the inlet hose screens The small mesh screens where the fill hoses connect to the machine catch sediment and debris, and a clogged screen chokes the fill down to a trickle or nothing at all. Pull the hoses and clean them out — this alone solves a real share of no-fill and slow-fill complaints.

Check each cause, easiest first

Ordered by how hard each is to check, not by how likely it is — so the cheap answers get ruled out before you open anything. The badge on each row shows where the smart money is. Percentages are share of repair-video attention, not a measured failure rate.

How to check. With the supply valves fully open, confirm water pressure is reaching the valve at the hose connection, then test the valve's solenoids for continuity.

lid lock#4 most-watched · 0.1% of repair videos $29.57
  • Basic tools
  • 20 min

How to check. With the lid closed, listen for the lock engaging, and confirm the washer only starts once the lock reports closed. Test continuity across the switch terminals with a meter if you have one.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

No continuity when the lid is closed means the lock switch has failed and the control board never sees a signal that it's safe to run, so the cycle won't start or won't advance to spin.

How to check. Check the fill level the machine actually reaches against the load-size setting selected, and inspect the switch's air hose or float mechanism for damage or disconnection.

A switch reading the wrong level causes the machine to fill too little, too much, or never satisfy the fill sensor at all, so the cycle hangs on fill.

How to check. Check the small air hose running from the tub to the pressure switch for a kink, a disconnection, or trapped water, then test the switch for continuity at the appropriate fill level.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

A kinked or disconnected hose reads as no water to the switch even with a full tub, which causes overfilling, underfilling, or a fill that never satisfies. Check the hose before replacing the switch.

Is it worth fixing at all?

Most pages answer this with the “50% rule” — spend no more than half a replacement's price. We went looking for the origin of that number and could not find one: it is widely credited to ENERGY STAR, whose actual published guidance is an age-and-condition checklist with no percentage in it. We use your machine's own measured running cost instead. We hold it for 119 LG washer models.

If the maths says replace it

We rank every washer we hold certification data for within its own size and configuration class — so you are comparing machines that would actually fit the same space. See the washer rankings →

When to stop and call someone

If you smell gas, stop now

Leave the appliance alone, ventilate, and call the gas utility. Nothing on this page is worth doing around a suspected leak.

Sealed-system work

Compressor and refrigerant repairs need EPA certification — that is a legal requirement, not a difficulty rating. A service call runs roughly $75–$150 before parts, so read the repair-or-replace maths above before booking.

Common questions

Where do these rankings come from?

Share of repair-video views for this symptom across 315 videos. The walkthroughs shown on this page come from AppliancePartsPros and RepairClinic.com. It measures what people watch. That correlates with what fails, but video age, channel size and search visibility all influence it, so we publish it as attention and never as a failure rate. Each cause shows the video count and total views behind its percentage.

Will the part fit my model?

We only show a part when it comes from a repair on a machine in the same LG family. Where we have no family-matched part we say so rather than substitute another brand's. For parts confirmed on one exact machine, use the model page above.

Is aftermarket as good as OEM?

Usually yes for simple mechanical parts like belts, fuses and thermostats; less reliably for control boards and sensors, where tolerances and firmware matter. Every listing is labelled.

Know your model number?

These LG washers have a fully verified repair page — every failure sourced, every part confirmed on that exact machine, rather than matched at family level as above.
