Whirlpool Gas Range Not Heating: 6 Causes, Ranked

Most-watched cause

Control Board

Boards are the most expensive part on the range and the least likely cause — most symptoms that look like a bad board turn out to be a failed sensor or switch instead.

Check yours now ↓

One cause below (control board) is not a DIY job. Two checks cost nothing — do those first.

⚠ Shut off the gas supply valve and unplug the machine before opening it. If a check points at the gas valve or a gas leak, stop and call a licensed technician — that is not a DIY repair.

Two checks that cost nothing

  1. Confirm gas is reaching the range Check that the supply valve behind the range is open and that your other gas appliances still work. If the whole house is out, the range isn't the fault. ⚠️ If you smell gas at any point, stop, leave and call the gas utility — that is not a diagnostic step.
  2. Watch and listen at the burner Start the oven and watch. Clicking with no flame, or a flame that lights and drops straight out, points at the ignition system rather than the gas supply. Nothing at all — no click, no glow — points further upstream.
  3. Try the cooktop burners Cooktop burners on most gas ranges light independently of the oven. If they light normally, gas is reaching the machine and the fault is in the oven's own ignition, not the supply.

Check each cause, easiest first

Ordered by how hard each is to check, not by how likely it is — so the cheap answers get ruled out before you open anything. The badge on each row shows where the smart money is. Percentages are share of repair-video attention, not a measured failure rate.

How to check. Look at the burner ports for food debris or a cap that's sitting off-center, and confirm you get a spark or glow when you turn the knob.

Clogged ports cause a weak or uneven flame; no spark or glow at all points at the igniter, not the burner itself.

How to check. Watch it when you turn on the oven or a burner — it should glow and get hot enough to light the gas within a matter of seconds.

Glows weak, slow, or not at all = it isn't drawing enough current to open the safety valve, so gas never flows. This is the most common reason a gas oven or burner won't heat.

How to check. Test continuity across the fuse, usually mounted behind the control panel or on the oven cavity wall.

No continuity = blown. It's a one-time safety device, so if it's blown once, ask why before replacing it — a stuck vent or a fan fault can blow the next one too.

How to check. Test resistance and compare against the value in the machine's tech sheet, or just watch the display for an oven temperature reading that never moves as the oven heats.

Out of range, or a reading that's stuck, means the control is running the oven off a false number.

How to check. Turn it and listen or feel for a click as it calls for heat, or test continuity across it if you have a meter.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

No click and no continuity means it isn't switching power through, so the element or burner it controls never gets told to turn on.

Can the manufacturer refuse to sell you this part? It depends on your state.

If a control board turns out to be your fault, you may need an official part. Whether a manufacturer has to sell you one is state law, not company policy — and it is not uniform.

CaliforniacoveredSB-244 names major appliances explicitly. Parts, tools and documentation must be offered on fair terms — 7 years for parts wholesaling at $100+.
ColoradocoveredHB24-1121's 14-item exclusion list omits appliances, so they are covered. Includes a parts-pairing ban.
OregoncoveredAppliances are not excluded from Oregon's right-to-repair statute.
Minnesotalikely coveredAppliances are not named as excluded and the definition is broad, but the statute does not name them either — read as covered, not confirmed.
New YorkexcludedHome appliances are carved out BY NAME from the Digital Fair Repair Act. A manufacturer is not required to sell you this part.
TexasexcludedAppliances are explicitly excluded from the state's repair statute.

Enforcement is by the state Attorney General in every state confirmed — none of these laws gives you a personal right to sue. Sourced from primary statute text; see our right-to-repair notes for citations.

Is it worth fixing at all?

Most pages answer this with the “50% rule” — spend no more than half a replacement's price. We went looking for the origin of that number and could not find one: it is widely credited to ENERGY STAR, whose actual published guidance is an age-and-condition checklist with no percentage in it. We use your machine's own measured running cost instead. We hold it for 788 Whirlpool range models.

When to stop and call someone

If you smell gas, stop now

Leave the appliance alone, ventilate, and call the gas utility. Nothing on this page is worth doing around a suspected leak.

Sealed-system work

Compressor and refrigerant repairs need EPA certification — that is a legal requirement, not a difficulty rating. A service call runs roughly $75–$150 before parts, so read the repair-or-replace maths above before booking.

Common questions

Where do these rankings come from?

Share of repair-video views for this symptom across 473 videos. The walkthroughs shown on this page come from AppliancePartsPros, PartSelect and RepairClinic.com. It measures what people watch. That correlates with what fails, but video age, channel size and search visibility all influence it, so we publish it as attention and never as a failure rate. Each cause shows the video count and total views behind its percentage.

Will the part fit my model?

We only show a part when it comes from a repair on a machine in the same Whirlpool family. Where we have no family-matched part we say so rather than substitute another brand's. For parts confirmed on one exact machine, use the model page above.

Is aftermarket as good as OEM?

Usually yes for simple mechanical parts like belts, fuses and thermostats; less reliably for control boards and sensors, where tolerances and firmware matter. Every listing is labelled.

Know your model number?

These Whirlpool ranges have a fully verified repair page — every failure sourced, every part confirmed on that exact machine, rather than matched at family level as above.
