Whirlpool Electric Range Not Heating: 6 Causes, Ranked

Most-watched cause

Bake Element

No continuity, or a visible break, means the element is open — that's your fault.

Check yours now ↓

One cause below (control board) is not a DIY job. Two checks cost nothing — do those first.

⚠ Unplug the range, or switch off its double-pole breaker — a range circuit is 240V and switching off one half still leaves the other live. Let the elements cool before touching them.

Two checks that cost nothing

  1. Check the breaker before anything else A range runs on a double-pole breaker, and one half can trip while the other still works — which is exactly why the cooktop can keep heating when the oven has gone dead. Switch the breaker fully off and back on. Costs nothing and rules out the whole machine.
  2. Try the oven and the cooktop separately The oven elements and the surface elements run on different parts. If one heats and the other doesn't, everything on the working side is ruled out — and you have halved what you need to check.
  3. Rule out a lockout or a delay setting Look at the display for a lock icon, or a delay-start or timer still set. A locked panel and a delayed start both look exactly like a dead oven. Clear it, reset the controls and try again.

Check each cause, easiest first

Ordered by how hard each is to check, not by how likely it is — so the cheap answers get ruled out before you open anything. The badge on each row shows where the smart money is. Percentages are share of repair-video attention, not a measured failure rate.

How to check. If the range has more than one element of the same size, swap it into a different position on the cooktop and see what happens.

If it works in the new spot, the element is bad. If it still doesn't heat, the fault stayed with that position, which points at the switch or wiring instead.

How to check. Look at the coil in the bottom of the oven for a visible break, blister, or bare-wire spot — it often shows where it failed. If it looks intact, test continuity across its terminals.

No continuity, or a visible break, means the element is open — that's your fault.

How to check. Look at the coil near the top of the oven cavity for a visible break or burn mark, then test continuity across its terminals if it looks intact.

No continuity = open. The oven can still bake with a dead broil element and still broil with a dead bake element, since the two run on separate circuits.

How to check. Test continuity across the fuse, usually mounted behind the control panel or on the oven cavity wall.

No continuity = blown. It's a one-time safety device, so if it's blown once, ask why before replacing it — a stuck vent or a fan fault can blow the next one too.

How to check. Test resistance and compare against the value in the machine's tech sheet, or just watch the display for an oven temperature reading that never moves as the oven heats.

Out of range, or a reading that's stuck, means the control is running the oven off a false number.

How to check. Check it last, only after the elements or igniter, the fuses, and the sensors all test good.

Boards are the most expensive part on the range and the least likely cause — most symptoms that look like a bad board turn out to be a failed sensor or switch instead.

Can the manufacturer refuse to sell you this part? It depends on your state.

If a control board turns out to be your fault, you may need an official part. Whether a manufacturer has to sell you one is state law, not company policy — and it is not uniform.

CaliforniacoveredSB-244 names major appliances explicitly. Parts, tools and documentation must be offered on fair terms — 7 years for parts wholesaling at $100+.
ColoradocoveredHB24-1121's 14-item exclusion list omits appliances, so they are covered. Includes a parts-pairing ban.
OregoncoveredAppliances are not excluded from Oregon's right-to-repair statute.
Minnesotalikely coveredAppliances are not named as excluded and the definition is broad, but the statute does not name them either — read as covered, not confirmed.
New YorkexcludedHome appliances are carved out BY NAME from the Digital Fair Repair Act. A manufacturer is not required to sell you this part.
TexasexcludedAppliances are explicitly excluded from the state's repair statute.

Enforcement is by the state Attorney General in every state confirmed — none of these laws gives you a personal right to sue. Sourced from primary statute text; see our right-to-repair notes for citations.

Is it worth fixing at all?

Most pages answer this with the “50% rule” — spend no more than half a replacement's price. We went looking for the origin of that number and could not find one: it is widely credited to ENERGY STAR, whose actual published guidance is an age-and-condition checklist with no percentage in it. We use your machine's own measured running cost instead. We hold it for 788 Whirlpool range models.

When to stop and call someone

If you smell gas, stop now

Leave the appliance alone, ventilate, and call the gas utility. Nothing on this page is worth doing around a suspected leak.

Sealed-system work

Compressor and refrigerant repairs need EPA certification — that is a legal requirement, not a difficulty rating. A service call runs roughly $75–$150 before parts, so read the repair-or-replace maths above before booking.

Common questions

Where do these rankings come from?

Share of repair-video views for this symptom across 338 videos. The walkthroughs shown on this page come from AppliancePartsPros, PartSelect and RepairClinic.com. It measures what people watch. That correlates with what fails, but video age, channel size and search visibility all influence it, so we publish it as attention and never as a failure rate. Each cause shows the video count and total views behind its percentage.

Will the part fit my model?

We only show a part when it comes from a repair on a machine in the same Whirlpool family. Where we have no family-matched part we say so rather than substitute another brand's. For parts confirmed on one exact machine, use the model page above.

Is aftermarket as good as OEM?

Usually yes for simple mechanical parts like belts, fuses and thermostats; less reliably for control boards and sensors, where tolerances and firmware matter. Every listing is labelled.

Know your model number?

These Whirlpool ranges have a fully verified repair page — every failure sourced, every part confirmed on that exact machine, rather than matched at family level as above.
