Frigidaire / Electrolux Washer Won't Spin: 6 Causes, Ranked

One cause below (transmission) is not a DIY job. Two checks cost nothing — do those first.

⚠ Unplug the machine and shut off both water valves before opening it. A washer holds water even when the cycle looks finished — expect the drum and hoses to drain when you disconnect them.

Two checks that cost nothing

  1. Check for standing water in the tub Open the door and look. Standing water means this is a drain problem, not a spin problem — most washers won't spin over water still in the tub, so work through the drain checks first rather than assuming a spin-related part has failed.
  2. Confirm the door or lid is locked Most machines won't spin at all unless the lock or latch reports engaged, even if the rest of the cycle runs. Open and firmly reclose the door, listen for the lock, and restart. If it spins once the lock catches, the latch is the next thing to check.
  3. Check the load for balance and size An unevenly distributed or very heavy load makes some washers skip or cut short the spin step as a safety measure. Redistribute the clothes evenly and try again before assuming a mechanical fault — this costs nothing and rules out the most common non-part cause.

Check each cause, easiest first

Ordered by how hard each is to check, not by how likely it is — so the cheap answers get ruled out before you open anything. The badge on each row shows where the smart money is. Percentages are share of repair-video attention, not a measured failure rate.

How to check. Locate the belt — many direct-drive washers don't use one — and check its tension and condition, looking for cracking, glazing, or a belt that's slipped off its pulley.

A loose, cracked, or off-track belt explains a drum that won't turn, or one that turns with a slipping or squealing sound, even while the motor runs normally.

How to check. With the lid closed, listen for the lock engaging, and confirm the washer only starts once the lock reports closed. Test continuity across the switch terminals with a meter if you have one.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

No continuity when the lid is closed means the lock switch has failed and the control board never sees a signal that it's safe to run, so the cycle won't start or won't advance to spin.

How to check. Test continuity across the lock switch or solenoid, and confirm it physically engages and releases when commanded. Some models hold the lock for a minute or two after the cycle ends, which is normal.

No continuity, or a lock that engages but never releases, means the control board can't confirm the door is secure, so it refuses to start the cycle or stops rather than spin with an unlocked door.

How to check. Have it tested with a meter set to capacitance, not continuity, and compare the reading against the rating printed on the capacitor's case. A visibly bulged or leaking capacitor is a fail on sight.

A reading well outside its printed rating, or a case that's bulged or leaking, means the capacitor can't give the motor the extra push it needs to start, so the drum hums or stalls instead of coming up to speed.

How to check. Listen for grinding or a change in pitch specifically during agitation or spin, separate from any pump or motor noise, and check underneath the machine for oil or fluid leaking from the transmission housing.

⚡ This one check needs the appliance plugged IN and running — the rest do not. Keep hands clear of the panel, touch nothing inside while it is live, and unplug again before replacing anything.

Grinding gears or a leaking case point at the transmission. This is a major-disassembly job, and on many machines the part and labor cost together are close to a replacement washer, so weigh that before ordering it.

Can the manufacturer refuse to sell you this part? It depends on your state.

If a transmission turns out to be your fault, you may need an official part. Whether a manufacturer has to sell you one is state law, not company policy — and it is not uniform.

CaliforniacoveredSB-244 names major appliances explicitly. Parts, tools and documentation must be offered on fair terms — 7 years for parts wholesaling at $100+.
ColoradocoveredHB24-1121's 14-item exclusion list omits appliances, so they are covered. Includes a parts-pairing ban.
OregoncoveredAppliances are not excluded from Oregon's right-to-repair statute.
Minnesotalikely coveredAppliances are not named as excluded and the definition is broad, but the statute does not name them either — read as covered, not confirmed.
New YorkexcludedHome appliances are carved out BY NAME from the Digital Fair Repair Act. A manufacturer is not required to sell you this part.
TexasexcludedAppliances are explicitly excluded from the state's repair statute.

Enforcement is by the state Attorney General in every state confirmed — none of these laws gives you a personal right to sue. Sourced from primary statute text; see our right-to-repair notes for citations.

Is it worth fixing at all?

Most pages answer this with the “50% rule” — spend no more than half a replacement's price. We went looking for the origin of that number and could not find one: it is widely credited to ENERGY STAR, whose actual published guidance is an age-and-condition checklist with no percentage in it. We use your machine's own measured running cost instead. We hold it for 20 Frigidaire / Electrolux washer models.

If the maths says replace it

We rank every washer we hold certification data for within its own size and configuration class — so you are comparing machines that would actually fit the same space. See the washer rankings →

When to stop and call someone

If you smell gas, stop now

Leave the appliance alone, ventilate, and call the gas utility. Nothing on this page is worth doing around a suspected leak.

Sealed-system work

Compressor and refrigerant repairs need EPA certification — that is a legal requirement, not a difficulty rating. A service call runs roughly $75–$150 before parts, so read the repair-or-replace maths above before booking.

Common questions

Where do these rankings come from?

Share of repair-video views for this symptom across 366 videos. The walkthroughs shown on this page come from AppliancePartsPros, PartSelect and RepairClinic.com. It measures what people watch. That correlates with what fails, but video age, channel size and search visibility all influence it, so we publish it as attention and never as a failure rate. Each cause shows the video count and total views behind its percentage.

Will the part fit my model?

We only show a part when it comes from a repair on a machine in the same Frigidaire / Electrolux family. Where we have no family-matched part we say so rather than substitute another brand's. For parts confirmed on one exact machine, use the model page above.

Is aftermarket as good as OEM?

Usually yes for simple mechanical parts like belts, fuses and thermostats; less reliably for control boards and sensors, where tolerances and firmware matter. Every listing is labelled.

Know your model number?

These Frigidaire / Electrolux washers have a fully verified repair page — every failure sourced, every part confirmed on that exact machine, rather than matched at family level as above.
