- Check the outlet and breaker Confirm the machine is plugged in fully, test the outlet with another device such as a phone charger, and check that the breaker or a nearby GFCI hasn't tripped. A tripped GFCI outlet near a laundry sink is a common, completely free cause of a washer that seems dead.
- Confirm the door is closed and latched Most washers won't start at all unless the door or lid reports locked. Close it firmly, listen or feel for the lock engaging, and press start again. If it starts once the lock catches, the interlock is the next thing to check.
- Check for a control lock or paused cycle Some models have a control-lock or child-lock feature that blocks all input until it's released — check the manual for how that model clears it. Also confirm a cycle wasn't left paused rather than stopped; press start again before assuming the machine ignored the last press.

Timer faults are uncommon on modern washers, most of which use an electronic control board instead. Suspect this only after the switches and motor circuit test good.

How to check. Check this last, only after the lock, latch, and motor circuits all test good, and look at the board itself for visible damage: burnt spots, a bulging capacitor, a burnt smell.
Boards are the most expensive part here and the least likely cause. Visible damage confirms it; an intact-looking board that still won't run a cycle after every switch checks out good is the remaining explanation.
