Whirlpool Washer Not Draining: The Hose Rule, the Part It Usually Is, and What It Costs

Three come from sources we read and link; four are computed from our own files, which are downloadable at the end of the page.

1. 4.5 in

   Whirlpool's own installation rule for a washer that will not drain: the drain hose must "not extend more than 4.5" (113 mm) into the drainpipe or laundry tub," it must not be taped in ("There must be a gap between the drain hose and the drainpipe to allow air to flow through. The air gap will break the suction"), and the top of the drain must be at least 30" (76.2 cm) off the floor. The WFW85HEFW0 and WET4027EW0 manuals add the other limit: the hose end no higher than 96" (2.4 m). ¹

   Whirlpool Product Help, Not Draining: Front Load Washer (its first cause is a clogged drain pump filter, its second the hose too far down the standpipe); the compact front-load page repeats the 4.5-inch figure. Whirlpool's F8E1 page gives a 39-inch drainpipe minimum where the not-draining page gives 30; we report both and do not resolve it. A hose pushed too far down siphons: the washer drains, refills, and drains again.

2. 9.5%

   Yale Appliance's 2022 report put Whirlpool front-load washers at a 9.5% first-year service rate, fourth of the five brands it tracked (LG 3.3%, Samsung 4.9%, GE 8.0%, Maytag 15.0%) on more than 3,000 front-load service calls. Five of the sixteen repair professionals Prudent Reviews consulted (2022, updated 2026) recommend Whirlpool; one would not. ²⁰

   Yale Appliance, Most Reliable Full-Size Clothes Dryer Brands for 2022 (the washer figures are in the same article; products serviced divided by products sold, December 2020 to October 2021); Prudent Reviews, The Most Reliable Washer and Dryer Brands (Andrew Palermo, updated 2026-04-29), which prints 9.5% as Yale's 2023 figure and 4.1% as a 2024 figure for Whirlpool front-loaders; the 4.1% could not be found on any Yale page we reached, and Yale's 2022 article, the one we link, carries 9.5%. Prudent also reports that Yale no longer carries Whirlpool washers as of its 2026 report. No newer Whirlpool washer service rate was found.

   The drain pump is a no-drain candidate on all 7 Whirlpool washer files in our corpus (A7500, WET4027EW0, WFW85HEFW0, WTW4915EW0, WTW7120HC1, WTW8120HC0, WTW8127LW1); the WFW85HEFW0 front-loader adds the drain hose. The numbers: front-load pump W10799065 (with W10425238 and W10605427 on the same file), top-load pump W11396717 on the WTW7120, WTW8120 and WTW8127 files, direct-drive pump WP3363892 on the WET4027EW0 laundry center, lid lock W10404050 on the WTW4915 file and W11394572 on the WTW7120 family. ²³

   Our repair corpus, seven Whirlpool washer model files built from vendor repair videos and parts catalogues; WET4027EW0 is a stacked washer-and-dryer laundry center with a mechanical dial and no display. Whirlpool's washer failure profile in our data gives the drain pump 33.5%, the lid lock 17.1% and the water inlet valve 16.7% of repair-video attention, figures identical to the any-brand washer profile, so not Whirlpool-specific. Attention share, not a failure rate.

4. 27%

   27% of 508 Reddit comments about Whirlpool washers raise the drain pump; 19% the pump filter, coin trap or debris; 11% the drain hose or standpipe; 6% a lid lock, door lock or switch; 14% an error code.

   Counted over comments and posts in threads whose title names a Whirlpool washer, or that name Whirlpool and a washer term themselves, from 850 harvested threads. Keyword themes; a comment can match several. Method and limits in the field-reports section.

5. $10–$50

   The parts that stop a Whirlpool washer draining on the WFW85HEFW0, WTW4915 and WTW7120-family files are matched to Amazon listings by part number: the lid-lock bezel W11545554, the genuine lid lock assembly W11394572, the water-level pressure switch WPW10448876, the front-load drain pump W10799065, the top-load pump W11396717, the direct-drive pump WP3363892, the lid lock W10404050, the door lock W10443885 and the genuine drain hose. The laundry center's water-level switch and the A7500's pressure-switch hose kit are the two costly exceptions in the decode table. howtofixit's range for a drain part is $10–$50; 911appliance's is $40–$100 part, $150–$280 fitted for a pump. ²⁵

   Amazon Creators API search on the part numbers in our seven Whirlpool files, listing whose title carries the number; genuine and compatible separated in the decode table. No Whirlpool page, manual or ranking guide we read prints a part number for a washer drain part.

6. 8 min

   The WFW85HEFW0 manual's own code for this fault: "F9 followed by E1 or F09 followed by E01 (drain pump system error)", with the fix "Check plumbing for correct drain hose installation. Drain hose extends into standpipe farther than 4½" (114 mm)." howtofixit's code table gives the trigger: "If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes without reaching reset level in pressure sensor, the valves are turned off," against a normal drain of under two minutes. "Sd" or "Sud" is the suds routine, F5 E2 the door not locking, and Lo FL or F8 E1 a fill error that drains for eight minutes with the door locked before it can reset. ⁵

Whirlpool's own F8E1 page says the drain routine takes eight to ten minutes. The F8E2, F4E0 and F3E2 codes attached to our Whirlpool files by vendor videos are a dispenser, heater and temperature-sensor error on howtofixit's table, not drain codes. The WET4027EW0 laundry center has no display and no codes.

7. $26 vs $21

   The median Whirlpool washer in our catalogue costs $26.36 a year to run against $20.71 for all washers; its top-loaders (median $48.96) cost nearly twice its front-loaders ($26.17), and the cheapest-to-run published Whirlpool, the WFH5424S front-loader, $15.06. The spread is $11 a year, which never pays for a new washer over a pump repair; the replace decision on a washer is the part against the machine's age, not electricity. ²⁴

Free checks first, cheapest first (installation, suds, filter), then the parts in the order the guides and the corpus agree on: the lock on a top-loader, the pump on any of them, the pressure switch, then the harness, timer and board. Every part below is matched by part number; where no Whirlpool number is sourced, the row says so.

• Maker Check that the top of the drain is at least 30" (76.2 cm) high (as measured from the floor.) ¹
• Maker Objects caught in washer drain system. / Empty pockets before washing. Loose items such as coins could fall between basket and tub or may block pump. It may be necessary to call for service to remove items. ⁶
• Repair guide The most obvious problem. It doesn't pump out because the pump doesn't work. ⁷

Match the symptom, not the part. Each row names the parts in the order the guides and the community check them.

• Not a fault Drains, then refills, then drains again; slow drain on a new installation — Siphoning. Whirlpool: the hose is more than 4.5" into the standpipe, or taped in with no air gap. Pull it back, leave it loose, and check the drain is at least 30" off the floor. Not a part. ¹
• Not a fault "Sd" or "Sud" on the display; foam — Whirlpool: excess suds; the washer is running a suds-reduction routine. Let it finish, then Rinse and Spin with no detergent. Switch to HE detergent, measured for the load. If it recurs on a clean load, applianceanalysts says a suds code can be a drain fault, so go to the filter. ⁵
• DIY part Front-loader drains slowly or not at all; pump hums — The filter and the pump inlet first: Whirlpool's first cause. Unplug, lower panel off, towels down, clean the filter and turn the impeller. Then the hose run for kinks and the strainer on the hose end. If the hum continues with everything clear, the pump (W10799065). ⁸
• DIY part F9 E1 on a front-loader — Drain pump system error: the manual says check the drain hose installation and the inlet hoses; howtofixit says the drain ran more than eight minutes without the pressure sensor seeing empty. Installation, filter, pump, then the pressure switch (WPW10448876) and its air hose. ¹¹
• DIY first, then a technician Top-loader washes, then stops before drain and spin; lid-lock light — The lid lock or lid switch, then the pump. wikiHow: it will not drain if it thinks the lid is open. W10404050 is on the WTW4915 file; W11394572 (genuine) on the WTW7120 family. If the lock tests good and the pump is silent with power, the harness and the board are a technician's diagnosis. ¹⁹
• DIY part Top-loader hums at the drain step; water left standing; something rattled — Objects in the pump. Whirlpool's WET4027EW0 manual, in its noises row: coins fall between basket and tub or block the pump, and it may take a service call to remove them. The pump itself is W11396717 on the WTW7120/8120/8127 files and WP3363892 on the WET4027EW0. ⁶
• DIY first, then a technician Pump tests good and gets no power on the drain step — iFixit's order: harness and connectors, then the timer (mechanical models), then the control board, "the end of the line." A technician's job on a board-controlled machine; on the WET4027EW0 the timer is a dial and a part. ⁷

Whirlpool's own checks first, because they are free and because a hose pushed too far into the standpipe looks exactly like a dead pump; then the filter, the lock, the pump and the switch on a meter.

1. Minute 0 The installation, before anything comes apart. Pull the washer out. Whirlpool's rules: the hose no more than 4.5" into the standpipe, not taped, an air gap, the drain at least 30" off the floor, the hose end under 96". Straighten any kink behind the machine. If the washer drains and refills, this is the whole fault.
2. Minute 5 Suds and the load. A Sud or Sd code, foam, or a tightly packed load: let the suds routine finish, run Rinse and Spin with no detergent, and switch to measured HE detergent. Whirlpool's manuals list this before any part.
3. Minute 20 Filter, coin trap, impeller. Unplug. Front-loader: lower panel off, towels and a shallow pan, because there are gallons behind the filter. Clean the filter, turn the impeller by hand (it should spin freely, per iFixit), clear the tub-to-pump boot. Front-loader: check the drum for items sticking through the holes (the WFW85HEFW0 manual's own tell). Top-loader: listen at the drain step for a rattle.
4. Hour 1 Lock, then pump, on the meter. Top-loader: lid lock or lid switch for continuity; a washer that thinks the lid is open does not drain. Then the pump: 10–40 Ω across the motor (iFixit); a hum with no flow is a jammed or dead pump; silence with voltage at the connector on the drain step is a dead pump. Front-loader: the door lock the same way if the display says F5 E2 or Ld.
5. Stop Pressure switch, harness, timer, board. If the pump runs and the machine still stalls or throws F9 E1, the pressure switch and its air hose (under 1 Ω closed, OL when blown into). If the pump reads good and gets no power, iFixit's order: harness, timer, then the control board, the end of the line, and a technician's diagnosis on a board-controlled machine. Inside the first year Whirlpool's warranty pays parts and labor through its own service company.

Every repair cost on this page against the two numbers that decide it: what the washer you have costs to run (our catalogue's median Whirlpool is $26.36 a year, its top-loaders $48.96) and what a replacement costs to run (the WFH5424S front-loader, the cheapest-to-run published Whirlpool, is $15.06 a year). On a washer the running-cost gap is small; the decision is the part against the age.

1. $0 Hose depth, air gap, standpipe height, suds, filter. Whirlpool's not-draining page and both manuals start and end here. 911appliance prices filter cleaning at $0 and recommends it every three to six months. If the washer drains after the hose is pulled back to 4.5 inches, nothing was broken. ¹
2. Low-cost parts Bezel, pressure switch, lid locks, door lock. The pressure switch WPW10448876 (a genuine listing also exists), lid lock W10404050, door lock W10443885, lid-lock bezel W11545554, and the genuine lid lock assembly W11394572 for the WTW7120 family. 911appliance's range for a lid switch is $20–$50 part, $120–$220 fitted. ²⁵
3. Mid-cost parts The drain pump, by platform. Front-load W10799065 (W10425238 also); top-load W11396717; direct-drive WP3363892 genuine. howtofixit's part range is $10–$50; 911appliance's pump range $40–$100 part, $150–$280 fitted. The labor, not the part, is the cost: 911appliance's fitted prices run roughly two to seven times its part prices. ²⁵
4. $100–$300 part Board or timer. 911appliance's range for a control board is $100–$300 part, $250–$500 fitted. The WFW85HEFW0 file carries six board numbers; the WET4027EW0 file five timer numbers. This is the row where an old washer stops being worth it, and it is a diagnosis, not a continuity test. ¹⁵
5. $26/yr What the washer you have costs to run. The median Whirlpool washer in our catalogue costs $26.36 a year at the national rate, against $20.71 for all washers; a Whirlpool top-loader runs about $49, a front-loader $26. A low-cost pump buys another year of that. ²⁴
6. $15/yr Replace, and what the running cost does. The cheapest-to-run published Whirlpool, the WFH5424S front-loader, costs $15.06 a year, $11 less than the median Whirlpool. That gap does not buy a washer; 911appliance's rule is repair if the machine is under ten years old and the repair is under half the price of a new one ($500–$1,500). ²⁴

The shares are the proportion of those comments that raise each theme; a comment can raise more than one. Method. 850 threads gathered 2026-09-13 from r/appliancerepair (216), r/Appliances (232), r/HomeImprovement (168), r/fixit (43), r/DIY (191), through Reddit's public search, sorted by top and by relevance for eight washer-not-draining queries (four of them brand-specific); Reddit blocked a share of thread fetches on the first pass (recovered on a second), and each thread keeps only its fifteen top-voted comments, so this is a sample of top-voted discussion and not a complete count. The unit of analysis is a comment or post in a thread whose title names a Whirlpool washer, or that itself names Whirlpool and a washer term (508 of 9,340 posts and comments harvested); AutoModerator and bot comments are excluded. Themes are keyword matches on the comment's text; a comment can match several. Why is my Whirlpool washer not draining?

Whirlpool's own answer is the installation and the filter: the drain hose more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe or taped in (it siphons), a standpipe under 30 inches, or a drain pump filter clogged with lint and small items; the manuals add too much or non-HE detergent, a packed load, and objects caught in the pump or between basket and tub. Past that it is a part: the lid lock on a top-loader (W10404050, W11394572), the drain pump on any of them (W10799065 front-load, W11396717 top-load), then the pressure switch (WPW10448876). ¹²³

How do I drain a Whirlpool washer that is full of water?

Unplug it. The WFW85HEFW0 manual's own answer first: select Drain & Spin to remove any water remaining in the washer; the door unlocks at the end of the drain. If the pump will not run, the drain pump filter on a front-loader is behind the lower front panel and there are gallons behind it (911appliance), so use towels and a shallow pan and open the cap slowly. On a top-loader, bail or siphon from the tub, or use the pump: Whirlpool's WET4027EW0 manual says a Rinse and Spin without detergent clears a suds-stalled drain. Do not leave the hose taped into the standpipe when you put it back. ¹⁵⁶

What does F9 E1 mean on a Whirlpool washer?

The WFW85HEFW0 manual: "drain pump system error," with the fix "Check plumbing for correct drain hose installation" and the hose no more than 4½ inches (114 mm) into the standpipe. howtofixit's table: the drain ran more than eight minutes without the pressure sensor reaching its reset level, where a normal drain is under two minutes. Installation, filter, pump, then the pressure switch and its air hose, in that order. ⁵¹¹

How far should the drain hose go into the standpipe?

Whirlpool: no more than 4.5 inches (113 mm), loose, never taped, with an air gap so the suction breaks; the top of the drain at least 30 inches off the floor and the hose end no higher than 96 inches (2.4 m). Whirlpool's F8E1 page says 39 inches for the minimum, howtofixit 36, and iFixit's generic figure is 4 inches of insertion; a standpipe at 39 inches or more satisfies every figure, including Whirlpool's stricter F8E1 page. ¹⁵

How do I test a Whirlpool washer drain pump?

Unplug, clear the filter and turn the impeller by hand; it should spin freely. iFixit: 10–40 Ω across the pump motor. applianceanalysts (on its Samsung page): a hum during the drain step means the pump has power and cannot move water (jammed or worn); iFixit's Samsung guide: no voltage at the pump during a drain command points to the board's relay; the converse, voltage and a silent pump, is this page's inference (that guide gives 10–60 Ω for a good pump where iFixit's troubleshooting page gives 10–40 Ω, so a reading in the 40s is not by itself a condemned pump). Is it worth repairing a Whirlpool washer that will not drain?

For the filter, the lock, the pump or the pressure switch, yes at almost any age: those parts on the modern files are low-cost next to a new washer (the two older-file pressure-switch parts are the exceptions). 911appliance's rule is repair if the machine is under ten years old and the repair is under half a new one ($500–$1,500). Electricity does not change the answer: the median Whirlpool washer costs $26.36 a year to run and the cheapest-to-run published Whirlpool, the WFH5424S, $15.06. Are Whirlpool washers reliable?
