LG Dryer Not Heating: The Part It Usually Is, What It Costs, and When to Stop

Three come from sources we read and link; four are computed from our own files, which are downloadable at the end of the page.

1. 20 / 40 Ω

   iFixit's LG guide gives the heating-element readings by wire pair, red-to-blue about 20 Ω, blue-to-yellow about 40 Ω, red-to-yellow about 20 Ω, and a thermistor at about 11,000 Ω at room temperature. Those two numbers separate a dead element from a dead sensor before you buy either. ²

   iFixit, How to Troubleshoot an LG Dryer That Won't Heat (Ben Schlichter). The guide is written for the front-teardown platform: top panel, control interface, door harnesses, bulkhead and drum come off before the heater canister is reached, which is the design an owner on thecooldown.com complains about. homeessentialsguide gives 8–15 Ω for the element instead; the two are not reconciled by either source, so test against your model's tech sheet.

2. InS → End

   LG's own first check is airflow, not the heater: the installation test runs the dryer empty and the display should return to InS after a minute and read End or 0 after the second; anything else is a restriction between the dryer and the outside wall. ¹

   LG Help Library, Why is My Dryer Not Heating, Not Drying or Taking a Long Time. The same page says Energy Saver is on by default for the Cotton/Normal cycle and that the cycle air-dries without heat for most of its length, which is the single most common not-a-fault on this page.

   The thermal fuse is a no-heat candidate on 4 of the 5 LG dryer files in our corpus that carry the symptom, the heating element on 3, the high-limit thermostat on 1. One part number, 6931EL3003D, covers the fuse on four of the six files. ¹⁴

   Our repair corpus: six LG electric-dryer model files (DLE0442W, DLE2514W, DLE2515S, DLE5955W, DLEX3700W, DLEX4000B) built from vendor repair videos and parts catalogues; DLE5955W carries no no-heat entry. In LG's electric-dryer failure profile in our data the thermal fuse takes 32.2% and the heating element 32.5% of repair-video attention (the any-brand electric profile gives the same figures, so this is not LG-specific). Attention share, not a failure rate.

   17% of 123 Reddit comments about LG dryers raise the thermal fuse or cutoff; 14% the heating element; 37% the vent, lint or airflow; 14% the breaker or 240 V supply.

   Counted over comments and posts in threads whose title names an LG dryer, or that name LG and a dryer term themselves, from 427 harvested threads. Keyword themes; a comment can match several. Method and limits in the field-reports section.

5. Mostly cheap

   The parts that stop an LG dryer heating run from a cheap thermostat (the cheapest in the chain) to the costly gas valve assembly 5221EL2002A, on Amazon by part number; the thermal fuse 6931EL3003D is sold in a kit with the high-limit thermostat. The electric heater element 5301EL1001J comes as a compatible part or as a much costlier genuine LG part. ¹⁶

   Amazon Creators API search on the part numbers in our six LG files and the two gas numbers howtofixit names, lowest listing whose title carries the number; genuine and compatible separated in the decode table. Only howtofixit names any LG part number among the pages that rank for the query, and it prices none of them.

6. 2.0%

   Yale Appliance's 2022 dryer report put LG at a 2.0% first-year service rate, second of the four full-size brands it carried (Whirlpool 0.4%, GE 5.2%, Maytag 6.0%) and under the 3.5% dryer average. Prudent Reviews' 2026 survey of sixteen repair professionals splits on the brand: two recommend it (one of them naming LG and GE as the brands with the fewest service issues), one tells customers to stay away from LG and Samsung. ¹⁰

   Yale Appliance, Most Reliable Full-Size Clothes Dryer Brands for 2022 (service calls December 2020 to October 2021); Prudent Reviews, The Most Reliable Washer and Dryer Brands (Andrew Palermo, updated 2026-04-29). Consumer Reports' 2026 survey of 96,315 dryers says LG accounts for more than half of the dryers its members bought in 2025. The one CPSC recall on LG dryers (2012, about 21,000 gas units) was a valve that would not shut off, the opposite fault; there is no recall for an LG that will not heat.

7. $114 vs $25

   The median LG dryer in our catalogue costs $114.30 a year to run; LG's heat-pump DLHC1455 costs $25.04 a year to run. That $89-a-year gap is the only number that ever makes replacing a dryer over a cheap fuse arithmetic instead of impatience. ¹⁵

Free checks first, then the safety chain (thermal fuse, thermal cutoff, high-limit), then the heater itself. Electric and gas dryers share everything up to the heater: an electric dryer heats with a coil, a gas dryer with an igniter, a valve and a flame sensor. Every part below is matched by part number; where no LG number is sourced, the row says so.

• Maker Airflow blockages can be caused by an obstruction in the duct work or lint build-up on your air filter. ¹

Match the symptom, not the part. Each row names the parts in the order the guides and the community check them.

• Not a fault Cotton/Normal cycle, clothes barely warm, dryer otherwise fine — Energy Saver. LG's page: it is on by default for Cotton/Normal and the cycle air-dries without heat for most of its length. Turn it off before you buy anything. ¹
• Not a fault Takes forever, display shows d80, d85, d90, d95 or Flow Sense bars — Airflow. LG's installation test (InS, then End or 0) tells you whether the restriction is between the dryer and the wall; a crushed hose behind the machine is the usual cause. The heater is fine. ¹
• DIY first, then a technician Electric, drum turns, stone cold, nothing else wrong — The breaker first: one leg of a two-pole 240 V breaker can trip and leave the motor running on 120 V. Reset it fully off and on. If it trips again, or the terminal block reads 120 V on one side, that is an electrician, not a part. ²

• DIY first, then a technician Gas, igniter glows but no flame, or flame dies — Valve coils (a coil at zero resistance will not open the valve, per howtofixit) or the flame sensor. The coils are a DIY swap; if the valve body itself is suspect, or you smell gas, close the supply and call a technician. 5221EL2002A is the full assembly, the costliest part here. ⁵

Free checks, then the safety chain with a multimeter, then the heater, then stop. Unplug before opening any panel; on a gas dryer close the gas valve too. Reconnecting a bypassed thermal fuse is how dryers catch fire, so never run one without it.

1. Minute 0 Settings and the breaker. Energy Saver off. Cycle set to a heated dry, not Air Dry. Breaker fully off, then on: on an electric LG a half-tripped two-pole breaker runs the drum and not the heater.
2. Minute 5 LG's installation test. Empty, cool drum; run the test from the panel; the display should come back to InS after a minute and End or 0 after the second. Check the hose behind the dryer is not crushed. Clean the lint screen and the wall cap.
3. Minute 20 Unplug. Meter on the terminal block (electric). About 120 V from each hot to neutral and about 240 V across the two, per iFixit. 120 V on one side is the supply, not the dryer.
4. Hour 1 The safety chain. Back covers off (howtofixit's route). Thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat on the heater or blower housing: continuity across each, near 0 Ω good, OL blown. Replace as a pair (6931EL3003D ships with 6931EL3001F) and clean the vent, because a fuse that blew once will blow again into a blocked duct.
5. Hour 2 The heater itself. Electric: element pairs at about 20, 40 and 20 Ω (iFixit), no continuity to the canister; on the design iFixit describes the drum comes out first. Gas: watch the igniter through the burner slot; no glow is the igniter (80–400 Ω), glow without flame is the coils or the flame sensor.
6. Stop Board, motor circuit, or a gas valve body. If 240 V reaches the board and everything downstream tests good, the heater relay on the board is the last suspect and a technician's call; so is any gas valve work beyond the coils. A repair company's fee schedule in this harvest starts at an $89 service call and a $185 minimum labor charge.

The repair steps against the two numbers that decide it: what the dryer you have costs to run (our catalogue's median LG is $114.30 a year) and what a replacement costs to run (LG's heat-pump DLHC1455, at $25.04 a year).

1. $0 Energy Saver off, breaker reset, vent cleared. LG's own page starts and ends here. If the installation test passes and the dryer heats, it was never broken. ¹
2. Low cost Thermal fuse, high-limit, blower thermostat, thermistor. Every sensor and safety in the chain is a low-cost compatible part, and the fuse comes with the high-limit in the kit. The genuine LG high-limit costs more. Against any replacement dryer none of these is a decision. ¹⁶
3. Mid cost Igniter (gas) or heater element (electric). Element 5301EL1001J, compatible or the much costlier genuine part; igniter 5318EL3001A. howtofixit's only price is for the multimeter; on the front-teardown design iFixit describes the cost is the labor, which is why the owner on thecooldown calls the design out. ⁵
4. Highest cost Gas valve assembly. 5221EL2002A if both coils test bad or the body is suspect; the coils alone are the usual fix and the valve body is a gas fitter's job. A repair company in the harvest lists an $89 service call and a $185 minimum labor charge before parts. ⁸
5. $114/yr What the dryer you have costs to run. The median LG electric dryer in our catalogue costs $114.30 a year at the national rate (gas dryers carry no running cost in the catalogue). A cheap fuse buys another year of that at little cost; a board or a motor on a fifteen-year-old vented dryer is where the next row starts to matter. ¹⁵
6. Replace Replace with a heat pump and keep the difference. LG's DLHC1455 heat-pump dryer (a 4.2 cu ft compact) runs $25.04 a year, $89 less than the median LG. That is a long payback on electricity alone, so it is a reason to choose a heat pump when the dryer is dead, not a reason to kill it. The cheapest-to-run published LG is the DLHC1455 at $25.04 a year. ¹⁵

   A blown fuse is a symptom of a blocked vent; clean the duct before you fit it or it blows again. Never run the dryer with the fuse bridged.

• Owner In order to do any kind of troubleshooting you have to completely take apart the dryer. ⁹
• Service company For any modern washer and dryer I would recommend LG or GE products. They seem to have the least amount of service issues. ¹¹
• Regulator The gas valve in the recalled dryers can fail to shut off properly, continuing to heat the dryer and its contents after the drying cycle is complete. ¹³

Why does my LG dryer run but not heat?

Because the motor and the heater are on different circuits. On an electric LG the drum runs on 120 V and the heater needs 240 V, so one tripped leg of the breaker leaves it tumbling cold; after that it is the safety chain (thermal fuse 6931EL3003D, with the high-limit in the kit) and then the element (5301EL1001J). On a gas LG it is the igniter or the valve coils. Check LG's Energy Saver setting first: it air-dries the Cotton/Normal cycle without heat for most of its length by design. ¹²

How do I run the LG dryer installation test, and what do InS and End mean?

What should an LG dryer heating element read on a multimeter?

My LG gas dryer's igniter glows but there is no flame. Which part?

The gas valve coils or the flame sensor. howtofixit: a coil that reads zero resistance will not open the valve. iFixit's generic gas guide: glowing for five minutes with no flame is the flame sensor; glowing for up to two minutes and quitting is the coils. If the igniter never glows it is the igniter (5318EL3001A) once the fuse chain tests good. Close the gas valve before any of it, and call a technician for the valve body. ⁵³

Was there a recall on LG dryers?

One, in 2012: LG and Sears recalled about 21,000 gas dryers (DLG0452W, DLG1320W, DLG2051W and Kenmore Elite twins) because the gas valve could fail to shut off and keep heating after the cycle, with 141 complaints and three minor burns. It is the opposite of a no-heat fault, and a CPSC search on "lg dryer" returns no recall for one that will not heat. ¹³

What do d80, d90 or Flow Sense mean on an LG dryer?

LG's airflow warnings: the display is telling you the exhaust is restricted between the dryer and the outside, by degree. Clean the duct and wall cap, straighten the hose behind the machine and re-run the installation test. The heater is not the problem. ¹
