Whirlpool Dryer Not Heating: The Part It Usually Is, What It Costs, and When to Stop
4 Whirlpool dryer repair files · 227 community comments · 115 Whirlpool dryers in our catalogue · Whirlpool's own troubleshooting read in full
Check both breakers before you buy anything: Whirlpool's own page explains that an electric dryer runs on two, one for the motor and one for the heater, so one tripped breaker turns the drum cold; on a gas dryer the drum turns with the shutoff valve closed. If it still runs without heat, the fault is in the safety chain, a thermal fuse or thermal cutoff that opens into a blocked vent, or in the heater itself: the element on an electric, the igniter and valve coils on a gas. Test the chain first, because it is a two-minute continuity check and the cheap part; the guides split on the order and end in the same place. Whirlpool's blog stops there and recommends a professional; one of the sixteen repair shops Prudent Reviews surveyed calls the brand cheap to maintain and easy to service (another would not recommend it), and on the WED85 platform every part in the chain is cheap and reached from the back in RepairClinic's WED85HEFW0 video.

5-minute heat test · both breakers · Air Only · gas valve · lint screen · vent
Whirlpool's Product Help: run a heated timed cycle empty for five minutes and feel inside; not Air Only; both breakers, because one runs the motor and one the heater; the gas shutoff handle parallel to the pipe; the cord terminals tight. Its blog adds the lint screen and a 4-inch metal vent. None of it costs anything.
The checks, in order ↓ -
Electric: runs, no heat
Thermal fuse and cutoff, then the element
fuse · cutoff · element
Both breakers fully off and on first, Whirlpool's own instruction: one runs the motor and one the heater. Then the fuse and cutoff by continuity, then the element by the numbers, 10–20 Ω on iFixit's figure.

Gas: runs, no heat
Igniter, then the valve coils
igniter · coils 1,000–2,000 Ω · shutoff valve parallel to the pipe
The shutoff valve first: the drum turns with it closed, Whirlpool's own words. Then lights off, watch the burner slot: no glow is the igniter once the fuse tests good; glow without flame is the valve coils or the flame sensor. Close the gas valve before opening anything.

01 / What this page adds
Seven numbers from the record
Three come from sources we read and link; four are computed from our own files, which are downloadable at the end of the page.
- 2 breakers
Whirlpool's own explanation of the commonest electric no-heat: "Electric dryers require a separate 30-amp circuit fused on both sides of the line. This means there will be 2 circuit breakers to operate the dryer. One circuit will operate the motor (turning the dryer drum), while the other circuit will operate the heating element. If one of these is tripped, the dryer may not heat." 2
Whirlpool Product Help, Not Heating: Electric Dryer (updated 2025-03-26). The owner's manual for WED85HEFW0 says the same in its troubleshooting table, and its gas page says the drum will turn with the shutoff valve closed. Whirlpool's blog lists seven causes (lint screen, vent, power, load, wet clothes, heating element or burner, thermal fuse) and recommends a professional for the last two.

Yale Appliance's 2022 dryer report put Whirlpool at a 0.4% first-year service rate, the lowest of the four full-size brands it carried (LG 2.0%, GE 5.2%, Maytag 6.0%) against a 3.5% dryer average. Five of the sixteen repair professionals Prudent Reviews consulted in 2026 recommend Whirlpool, more than any brand but Speed Queen. 10
Yale Appliance, Most Reliable Full-Size Clothes Dryer Brands for 2022 (service calls December 2020 to October 2021, products serviced divided by products sold); Prudent Reviews, The Most Reliable Washer and Dryer Brands (Andrew Palermo, updated 2026-04-29), which prints the same figure as 0.4% in its table and .04% in one sentence, a typo. One Grand Rapids company in the same survey would not recommend Whirlpool. No newer Yale dryer report was found.

The heating element is a no-heat candidate on 2 of the 3 Whirlpool dryer files in our corpus that carry the symptom (DE110 and WED85HEFW0, both electric); WED85HEFW0 adds the high-limit thermostat and the thermal fuse; the gas WGD49STBW2 file's only no-heat candidate is the temperature select switch, for heat on some settings only, and the gas DG303 file carries no entry. The numbers on the modern electric file: element WP8544771, thermal fuse W10909685, high-limit WP8557403, thermistor WP8577274. 14
Our repair corpus, four Whirlpool dryer model files built from vendor repair videos and parts catalogues. Whirlpool's electric-dryer failure profile in our data gives the heating element 32.5%, the thermal fuse 32.2% and the high-limit thermostat 17.3% of repair-video attention, figures identical to the any-brand electric profile, so not Whirlpool-specific. Attention share, not a failure rate.

- Mostly cheap
On the modern WED85 platform the parts that stop a Whirlpool electric dryer heating run from a cheap thermal cutoff 3392519 (the number howtofixit links to) to the heating element WP8544771 (compatible; Whirlpool's genuine part costs much more) on Amazon by part number; the older DE110's element costs far more; the thermal fuse W10909685, the high-limit WP8557403 and the gas igniter WP37001308 are low-cost. spinchill's ranges for the same parts start at $8 for a fuse and $30 for an element. 16
Amazon Creators API search on the part numbers in our four Whirlpool files, the brand failure profile and howtofixit's guide, lowest listing whose title carries the number; genuine and compatible separated in the decode table. Whirlpool's blog and Product Help pages, wikiHow and iFixit name no part number; howtofixit links to a listing for one (3392519) without printing it in the article.
- 1 year
Whirlpool's dryer warranty, from the owner's manual for WED85HEFW0: for one year from purchase Whirlpool "will pay for Factory Specified Replacement Parts and repair labor to correct defects in materials or workmanship," with service by a Whirlpool-designated company. Parts and labor, one year, nothing longer on the heater. 5
Whirlpool Use & Care Guide W10804688A, Limited Warranty page; no standalone warranty page could be reached on whirlpool.com. The three CPSC dryer recalls touching the company (a 2023 commercial ADC line, a 2002 washer-dryer combo, a 1997 Maytag line) are all for overheating, the opposite fault; a search on "whirlpool dryer" returns nothing.
- $115 vs $43
The median Whirlpool dryer in our catalogue costs $114.58 a year to run; the cheapest-to-run published Whirlpool, the WHD3090G heat pump, costs $43.12. That $71-a-year gap is the only number that ever makes replacing a dryer over a cheap fuse arithmetic instead of impatience. 15
annual_cost_usd on 543 Whirlpool dryer records (115 published) at the catalogue's EIA national residential rate. None of the published Whirlpool dryers carries a UPC-matched Amazon offer in our data, so no purchase price is given; Consumer Reports' members paid a median $733 for a standard electric dryer and $787 for a gas one over the past five years.

02 / Two counts
What our repair files name, and what owners describe
Left: which parts the 4 Whirlpool dryer repair files in our corpus list as no-heat candidates. Right: what the community's Whirlpool-dryer comments talk about when a dryer stops heating. The repair files rank the parts; the community count puts the vent first among the causes, because a no-heat thread on Reddit is where people go before they buy anything.
Corpus: files naming the part as a no-heat candidate (of 3)
Community: share of 227 Whirlpool dryer comments raising the theme (%)
03 / Which cause
The causes, in the order to check them, with the part
Free checks first, then the safety chain (thermal fuse, thermal cutoff, high-limit), then the heater itself. Electric and gas dryers share everything up to the heater: an electric dryer heats with a coil, a gas dryer with an igniter, a valve and a flame sensor. Every part below is matched by part number; where no Whirlpool number is sourced, the row says so.
| Cause | What you notice | The check | Part |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power, settings, vent (both fuels) | Drum turns; clothes come out cold or take two cycles; or Air Only is selected. | Whirlpool's own test: a heated timed cycle, five minutes empty, feel inside. Air Only never heats. Electric: both breakers, one runs the motor and one the heater; 240 V at the outlet; cord terminals tight. Gas: the shutoff handle parallel to the pipe. Then the lint screen (a nylon brush every six months) and the vent: 4-inch metal only, the hood 12 inches off the ground. | $0 · Whirlpool's own vent test kit is part W11224254 |
| Thermal fuse and thermal cutoff | Runs, no heat at all, after a hot or lint-choked cycle. | Unplug. iFixit: on an electric the thermal cutoff sits near the heating element, on a gas on the duct where heated air enters the drum, and the machine will in many cases still spin with it blown. Continuity across each: 0 Ω good, infinite blown (spinchill). Never bypass either. Clean the vent before fitting the new one or it blows again. | W10909685 · 3392519 cutoff |
| High-limit and cycling thermostats | Heats, then quits mid-cycle, or no heat with good fuses. | iFixit's first cause on both fuels: the thermostat should show continuity (near 0 Ω) at room temperature; open, replace. howtofixit's Rx1 test accepts 'infinity or zero' as a pass, which contradicts iFixit and every other source: a cycling thermostat reading infinity at room temperature is open. | WP8557403 · WP3977767 |
| Heating element (electric) | Fuses and thermostats pass, still no heat; sometimes a burnt smell or a visibly broken coil. | iFixit: 10–20 Ω across the element; over 50 Ω or open, replace; over 30 Ω may be a multi-coil element, which reads 20–25 Ω per coil to the common terminal. Whirlpool's blog and wikiHow both say the machine has to come apart to reach it and recommend a professional. | WP8544771 |
| Thermistor | Heat is wrong rather than absent; cycles end early or late. | The temperature sensor the board reads; cheap, and tested before the board. On the WED85HEFW0 file. | WP8577274 |
| Gas: igniter | Gas dryer, drum turns, igniter never glows (look through the burner inspection slot with the lights off). | howtofixit: continuity across the igniter. No glow with continuity on the fuse chain means the igniter or its circuit. WP37001308 is the igniter in our Whirlpool gas failure profile. | WP37001308 |
| Gas: valve coils and flame sensor | Igniter glows, no flame; or glows, lights, and goes out. | wikiHow: a two-terminal solenoid reads 1,000–2,000 Ω, a three-terminal 300–2,000 Ω per pair. howtofixit: an igniter that glows a short while and turns off without igniting the gas is the coil. iFixit: the valves do not open unless the flame sensor sees the igniter hot enough. The coils are DIY; the valve body is the gas fitter's. No sourced Whirlpool coil number, so none is listed here. | coils and flame sensor: no sourced part number |
| Centrifugal switch, timer, control board | Every part above tests good and 240 V reaches the terminal block. | iFixit: a failed centrifugal switch on the motor makes the dryer act as though there is no airflow and will not allow the heat source to operate; a bad moisture-sensor circuit stops heat on automatic cycles but not timed ones. The board is a technician's diagnosis; our WED85HEFW0 file carries it as W10875487 and spinchill's range is $150–300. | technician · W10875487 on the WED85 file |
- Maker The drum of a gas dryer will turn, but the dryer will not heat if the gas shutoff valve is closed. Open the gas shutoff valve in the supply line. The valve is open when the handle is parallel to the gas pipe. 3
- Maker Dryers are mandated to carry a thermal fuse to prevent fires. These fuses are a one-time device: when the temperatures within the dryer get too high, they will go off, shutting down the dryer. 1
- Repair guide Measure the resistance with a multimeter. It should register 10-20 ohms (Ω) 7
Whirlpool dryer runs but no heat: why the drum still turns
A Whirlpool electric dryer's motor runs on one leg of the 240 V supply and the heater on both, which is why Whirlpool's own page says a single tripped breaker leaves the drum turning and the air cold. Downstream of the supply the heat runs through a chain of safeties in series, thermal fuse on the blower housing, thermal cutoff and high-limit at the heater, cycling thermostat in the airstream, and any one of them open cuts the heater and nothing else; iFixit notes the machine will in many cases still spin with the cutoff blown. The heater itself fails last: an element coil breaks (reads OL or over 50 Ω) or touches the housing; a gas igniter cracks and never glows; a valve coil opens and the burner never lights. Every guide on this page follows that chain because the dryer's own design does.
It's not too uncommon for only one breaker or fuse to trip, which results in the dryer being able to turn on and even tumble…. yet not heat up. 8
04 / By symptom
What you see, and what it usually is
Match the symptom, not the part. Each row names the parts in the order the guides and the community check them.
- Not a fault Air Only or Air/Fluff selected, drum turns, no heat — Whirlpool: "The Air Only cycle or Air/Fluff Only does not add heat to the dryer at any time during the cycle." Not a fault. 3
- Not a fault Heats, but takes two cycles; lint screen packed; vent crushed — Whirlpool's blog: a clogged screen or vent is not necessarily why the dryer will not heat, but it is why it will not dry. Brush the screen every six months; the vent is 4-inch metal with the hood 12 inches clear of the ground. 1
- DIY first, then a technician Electric, drum turns, stone cold, nothing else wrong — Both breakers, Whirlpool's way: one runs the motor and one the heater, so a single tripped breaker turns the drum and heats nothing. Turn the double-pole breaker all the way off and on (howtofixit, because a half-trip is hard to see). If it trips again, or the outlet reads 120 V on one leg, that is an electrician, not a part. 2
- DIY part Electric, drum turns, stone cold, both breakers fine — The safety chain, then the heater: thermal fuse W10909685 and cutoff 3392519 by continuity, high-limit WP8557403, then the element WP8544771 at 10–20 Ω on iFixit's figure. Our WED85HEFW0 file lists all three. 14
- DIY part Heats, then stops heating partway; or heats on timed cycles only — A thermostat tripping, or, if it heats on timed dry and not on automatic, the moisture-sensor circuit reading open (iFixit). Clean the vent as well, because an overheating dryer is usually a choked dryer. 7
- DIY part Gas, drum turns, igniter never glows — The gas shutoff valve first (handle parallel to the pipe), then the igniter WP37001308 once the fuse chain tests good; howtofixit tests it by continuity. 8
- DIY first, then a technician Gas, igniter glows but no flame, or flame dies — Valve coils (1,000–2,000 Ω on a two-terminal solenoid, per wikiHow) or the flame sensor. howtofixit: a glow that stops without lighting the gas is the coil. The coils are a DIY swap; if the valve body is suspect, or you smell gas, close the supply and call a technician. 6
By what the display shows
- No code; drum turns
- Whirlpool's blog, Product Help pages and the WED85HEFW0 manual give no heat-related code, and our WED85HEFW0 file claims none. A blown fuse or a dead element gives no code. Unplug and go to the safety chain. 14
- L2, AF, F-01, PF on a competing page
- spinchill.com publishes those four as Whirlpool no-heat codes with no citation; none appears on any Whirlpool page or manual we read. Treat them as unverified. 9
- Runs on Air Only
- Not a fault. Whirlpool: Air Only never adds heat. 2
05 / The routine
Diagnose in this order
Free checks, then the safety chain with a multimeter, then the heater, then stop. Unplug before opening any panel; on a gas dryer close the gas valve too. Reconnecting a bypassed thermal fuse is how dryers catch fire, so never run one without it.
- Minute 0 Whirlpool's five-minute test, then both breakers. A heated timed cycle, five minutes empty, feel inside. If it is cold: not Air Only; both breakers fully off and on, because one runs the motor and one the heater and a half-tripped double-pole breaker is hard to see.
- Minute 5 Supply and airflow. Gas: the shutoff handle parallel to the pipe. Electric: 240 V at the outlet if you own a meter, and the cord terminals tight. Lint screen brushed; the vent 4-inch metal, uncrushed, the hood 12 inches clear. Whirlpool sells a vent test kit as part W11224254.
- Hour 1 The safety chain. Unplug. Rear panel off. Thermal fuse and thermal cutoff (near the element on an electric; on the inlet duct on a gas, per iFixit) and the high-limit and cycling thermostats: continuity across each, 0 Ω good, infinite blown. Replace what reads open and clean the vent, because a fuse that blew once will blow again into a blocked duct.
- Hour 2 The heater itself. Electric: element at 10–20 Ω on iFixit's figure, over 50 or open is dead, over 30 may be a multi-coil element (20–25 Ω per coil), and no continuity to the housing. Gas: watch the igniter through the burner slot; no glow is the igniter, glow without flame is the coils (1,000–2,000 Ω) or the flame sensor.
- Stop Centrifugal switch, timer, board, or a gas valve body. If 240 V reaches the terminal block and everything downstream tests good, iFixit's last suspects are the centrifugal switch on the motor, the timer and the board, a technician's call; so is any gas valve work beyond the coils. Under a year old, Whirlpool's warranty pays for parts and labor through its own service company.
06 / What to expect
What it costs: fix or replace
The repair steps against the two numbers that decide it: what the dryer you have costs to run (our catalogue's median Whirlpool is $114.58 a year) and what a replacement costs to run (Whirlpool's heat-pump WHD3090G, the cheapest-to-run published Whirlpool, is $43.12 a year; no published Whirlpool dryer carries an Amazon offer in our data, so no purchase price is given).
- $0 Both breakers reset, Air Only off, gas valve open, vent cleared. Whirlpool's Product Help pages start and end here. If the five-minute test comes back warm, it was never broken. 2
- Low cost Thermal cutoff, high-limit, thermal fuse, thermistor. Every sensor and safety in the chain is a low-cost compatible part (3392519, WP3977767, W10909685, WP8557403, WP8577274). spinchill's ranges are $8–25 for a fuse and $12–30 for a high-limit. Against any replacement dryer none of these is a decision. 16
- Mid cost Igniter (gas) or heating element (electric). Element WP8544771, compatible or the costlier genuine part; igniter WP37001308. spinchill's ranges: element $30–80, igniter $20–40. Whirlpool and wikiHow both recommend a professional for the element because the machine comes apart to reach it; that labor, not the part, is the cost. 9
- $25–50–$150–300 Coils, flame sensor, timer, board. spinchill's ranges: gas valve coils $25–50, flame sensor $15–35, timer $75–150, control board $150–300. No sourced Whirlpool number for the coils, sensor or timer; the WED85HEFW0 board is W10875487, left off the table because it is a diagnosis, not a continuity test. The board is the row where a fifteen-year-old vented dryer stops being worth it. 9
- $115/yr What the dryer you have costs to run. The median Whirlpool dryer in our catalogue costs $114.58 a year at the national rate, and Yale's 0.4% service rate says a Whirlpool is the dryer least likely to need the visit in its first year. A cheap cutoff buys another year of that at little cost. 15
- $43/yr Replace with a heat pump and keep the difference. The cheapest-to-run published Whirlpool, the WHD3090G heat pump, costs $43.12 a year, $71 less than the median Whirlpool. Consumer Reports' members paid a median $733 for a standard electric dryer, so the saving is a reason to choose a heat pump when the dryer is dead, not a reason to kill it. None of the published Whirlpool dryers carries an Amazon offer in our data. 15

-
Runs, no heat at all
Thermal fuse W10909685
W10909685 · rear panel · continuity
The cheapest part in the chain and the safety the community raises most (26% of comments; the element is 30%); Whirlpool's own words are that it goes off when the temperatures within the dryer get too high. On our WED85HEFW0 file. 0 Ω good, infinite blown.
A blown fuse is a symptom of a blocked vent; clean the duct before you fit it or it blows again. Never run the dryer with the fuse bridged.
-
Chain tests good, still cold (electric)
Heating element assembly WP8544771
WP8544771 · rear panel · multimeter
The coil for the WED85 platform, on our WED85HEFW0 file and in the brand failure profile. iFixit: 10–20 Ω across it; over 50 Ω or open is dead; over 30 may be a multi-coil element. Whirlpool's blog recommends a professional because the machine comes apart; on this platform it is a rear panel.
Check for continuity to the housing as well as across the terminals.
-
Runs, no heat, fuse tests good
Thermal cutoff 3392519
3392519 · continuity
The second safety, near the element on an electric and on the inlet duct on a gas (iFixit); it acts like a fuse and is not resettable, and the machine will in many cases still spin with it blown. The number howtofixit names and the one in our brand profile.
Sold in kits with a high-limit thermostat; fit both if the kit is what arrives.
-
Heats, then quits mid-cycle
High-limit thermostat WP8557403
WP8557403 · continuity
The thermostat that cuts the heater when the box overheats and resets when it cools; iFixit's first cause on both fuels is a thermostat that will not show continuity at room temperature. On our WED85HEFW0 file.
WP3977767 is the high-limit number in the brand profile, in the decode table. If it trips repeatedly, the cause is airflow.
-
Wrong heat, cycles end early or late
Thermistor WP8577274
WP8577274 · multimeter
The temperature sensor the board reads, on our WED85HEFW0 file. Cheap, and tested before the board.
A reading that does not fall as the sensor warms is the failure.
-
Gas: igniter never glows
Igniter WP37001308
WP37001308 · gas valve closed
The igniter in our Whirlpool gas failure profile; howtofixit tests it by continuity. No glow with continuity on the fuse chain means the igniter or its circuit. Not on a model file: our two gas files carry no heat-chain part.
Handle it by the base; the element is brittle. Close the gas supply before opening the burner.

08 / The Whirlpool question
What is different about a Whirlpool dryer
Three things on the record: the best service rate in the one series that measures dryers, a maker that explains the two-breaker fault and then sends you to a professional, and a one-year warranty that covers labor.
- Yale Appliance first-year service rate, Whirlpool dryers
- 0.4%2022 report, lowest of four brands (LG 2.0%, GE 5.2%, Maytag 6.0%); dryers average 3.5% 10
- Repair professionals recommending Whirlpool

- Whirlpool warranty on a dryer
- 1 yrparts and labor, from the WED85HEFW0 owner's manual; service by a Whirlpool-designated company 5
- CPSC recalls for a Whirlpool dryer that will not heat
- 0the three dryer recalls touching the company (2023 commercial ADC, 2002 combo unit, 1997 Maytag) are all for overheating 13
- Maker Because dryers require disassembling the machine to examine/replace their heating elements, we recommend contacting a professional if the previous DIY solutions fail to return heat to your dryer. 1
- Service company We highly recommend Whirlpool washer and dryers. They’re reliable, cheap to maintain, and easy to service. 11
- Repair guide Whirlpool dryers also have thermal cutoffs. They act like a fuse and trip and are not resettable. Unlike the thermal fuse, the machine will, in many cases, still spin if this is blown. 7

The two gas files (DG303, WGD49STBW2) carry no heat-chain part.
- Gas valve coils, the flame sensor, the centrifugal switch and the timer are not in this table because no source we read names a Whirlpool part number for them. The WED85HEFW0 control board is W10875487; it is left out because it is a technician's diagnosis, not a continuity test.

Where they agree
- Both breakers before anything. Whirlpool's Product Help page, its blog, its manual, howtofixit and spinchill all describe the same fault: an electric dryer on two breakers, and a single tripped one leaves the drum turning and the air cold.
- The safety chain is a continuity test. iFixit, howtofixit and spinchill all test the fuse, the cutoff and the thermostats for continuity; they differ on whether to do it before or after the element (below), and every one of those parts is cheap on the WED85 platform.
- The gas tree is the same everywhere it is drawn. wikiHow, howtofixit, spinchill and iFixit agree: a glow with no flame is the coils or the flame sensor, no glow is the igniter, and the coils read 1,000–2,000 Ω.
- Whirlpool's own pages stop at the supply. Both Product Help pages end at the breakers and the shutoff valve; only the blog names the element and the fuse, and it recommends a professional for both. Every third-party source, and our corpus, goes further.
Where they split
- Thermostat first, or element first? — iFixit: the cycling or operating thermostat, on both fuels. howtofixit (after the element): the cutoff and the cycling thermostat. spinchill (after power and the gas valve): the thermal fuse, then the element. Whirlpool: the element and the fuse, by a professional. The community, by count: the vent, then the element, then the fuse. Test order is the answer, not part order: the thermostats and fuses are a two-minute continuity check on the way to the element, and on our WED85HEFW0 file all of them are cheap. Buy the element only after the element reads open or over 50 Ω.
- Do it yourself, or call? — Whirlpool and wikiHow: call a professional for the element and the fuse, because the machine comes apart. howtofixit, iFixit and spinchill: a multimeter and a continuity test. Prudent Reviews' professionals: five of sixteen recommend Whirlpool, one calling it cheap to maintain and easy to service; one would not recommend it. The maker's advice is warranty-shaped: inside the first year its own service is free and required. Outside it, the safety chain on this platform reads on a basic multimeter (behind the rear panel in RepairClinic's WED85HEFW0 video); the element is a cheap coil. Call for the coils' valve body, the board, and anything that will not read.
- How reliable is a Whirlpool dryer? — Yale's 2022 dryer report: 0.4%, first of four. Prudent Reviews' professionals: five of sixteen recommend Whirlpool; one Grand Rapids company would not. Consumer Reports: Whirlpool is about 9% of what its members bought in 2025 and its electric-dryer satisfaction improved in 2026; no number outside the paywall. The best figure in the one hard series, and the series is four years old and from one dealer. Nothing in it says a Whirlpool never stops heating; it says that when one does, the parts are cheap, the platform is simple, and the trade likes working on it.

If the element shows a much higher resistance (over 50 Ω) or an open circuit it should be replaced. A High resistance (over 30 Ω) may be a sign of a multi part element.

Examine the dryer breaker to see if half of the double-pole breaker is tripped. Sometimes it's difficult to tell visually. To be sure, turn it all the way OFF and then back ON.

Gas dryers use solenoids to make the igniter ignite the gas. If the solenoid (gas valve coil) fails, the ignition will glow but won't actually ignite anything.

Electric dryers require a separate 30-amp circuit fused on both sides of the line. This means there will be 2 circuit breakers to operate the dryer. One circuit will operate the motor (turning the dryer drum), while the other circuit will operate the heating element. If one of these is tripped, the dryer may not heat.

12 / Questions
Frequently asked
- Why does my Whirlpool dryer run but not heat?
- Whirlpool's own answer: an electric dryer runs on two breakers, one for the motor and one for the heater, so one tripped breaker turns the drum cold; a gas dryer's drum turns with the shutoff valve closed. After that it is the safety chain (thermal fuse W10909685, cutoff 3392519, high-limit WP8557403) and then the element (WP8544771) on an electric, or the igniter (WP37001308) and the valve coils on a gas. Air Only never heats. 214
- How do I test whether a Whirlpool dryer is heating at all?
- Whirlpool's test: select a heated timed cycle, run it empty for five minutes, open the door and feel inside. Warm means the heater works and the problem is drying performance (the vent, the screen, the load); cold means the no-heat path on this page. 3
- How do I test the thermal fuse on a Whirlpool dryer?
- Unplug it. Rear panel off. iFixit: on an electric the thermal cutoff sits near the heating element, on a gas on the duct where heated air enters the drum; the thermal fuse is on the blower housing. Pull the wires and read continuity across each: 0 Ω is good, infinite is blown (spinchill). Replace what reads open (W10909685, 3392519) and clean the vent, or the new one blows the same way. Never bridge a fuse to test the heater. 79
- What should a Whirlpool dryer heating element read on a multimeter?
- iFixit: 10–20 Ω across the element; over 50 Ω or an open circuit means replace it; over 30 Ω may be a multi-coil element, which reads 20–25 Ω per coil to the common terminal. spinchill uses the same over-50 threshold. Continuity from a terminal to the housing is a short and also condemns it. 79
- My Whirlpool gas dryer's igniter glows but there is no flame. Which part?
- The gas valve coils or the flame sensor. howtofixit: an igniter that glows a short while and turns off without igniting the gas is the coil; wikiHow: a two-terminal solenoid should read 1,000–2,000 Ω, a three-terminal 300–2,000 Ω per pair; iFixit: the valves do not open unless the flame sensor sees the igniter hot enough. If the igniter never glows it is the igniter (WP37001308) once the fuse chain tests good. Close the gas valve first, and call a technician for the valve body. 86
- How much does it cost to fix a Whirlpool dryer that is not heating?
- On the WED85 platform the parts run from a cheap thermal cutoff to the heating element (compatible; the genuine part costs more) on Amazon by part number, and the older DE110's element costs far more; the thermal fuse, the high-limit and the igniter are low-cost. spinchill's ranges: thermal fuse $8–25, element $30–80, igniter $20–40, coils $25–50, control board $150–300. No ranking guide prices the labor; inside the first year Whirlpool's warranty covers parts and labor. 1695
- Is it worth repairing a Whirlpool dryer?
- For anything in the safety chain or the element, yes at any age: on the modern platform the parts are low-cost and the machine is simple; only the old DE110's element breaks that rule. What changes the answer is the running cost: the median Whirlpool dryer costs $114.58 a year to run and Whirlpool's own heat-pump WHD3090G $43.12, so a dead board or motor on an old vented dryer is where replacement starts to pay. Consumer Reports' members paid a median $733 for a standard electric dryer. 1512
- Are Whirlpool dryers reliable?
- Yale Appliance's 2022 report put Whirlpool at a 0.4% first-year service rate, the lowest of the four full-size brands it carried (LG 2.0%, GE 5.2%, Maytag 6.0%) and well under the 3.5% dryer average; no newer Yale dryer report was found. Five of the sixteen repair professionals Prudent Reviews consulted in 2026 recommend Whirlpool, more than any brand but Speed Queen, and one calls it reliable, cheap to maintain and easy to service; one company would not recommend it. Consumer Reports' 2026 survey says satisfaction improved for Whirlpool electric dryers, without a number outside its paywall. 101112
- What does the Whirlpool dryer warranty cover?
- From the WED85HEFW0 owner's manual: for one year from purchase Whirlpool pays for factory-specified replacement parts and repair labor to correct defects in materials or workmanship, with service by a Whirlpool-designated company and fourteen exclusions (commercial use, improper installation, non-genuine parts, gas conversion, misuse among them). Nothing longer on the heater. No standalone warranty page could be reached on whirlpool.com. 5
- Which Whirlpool part numbers fit my dryer?
- From our WED85HEFW0 file: heating element WP8544771, thermal fuse W10909685, high-limit thermostat WP8557403, thermistor WP8577274; from the brand failure profile and howtofixit: thermal cutoff 3392519, high-limit WP3977767, gas igniter WP37001308; from the older DE110 file, element coils WPY313538 and WPY303404. Check the parts diagram for your model tag before ordering. 148

The theme Whirlpool owners raise most: check the airflow at the outside wall, because elements go early when it is bad, and a warning against the cheapest Amazon part.
The cost gap as one owner found it: a cheap part against a $400 quote.
An owner reading the element: 13 Ω, inside iFixit's 10–20.
Two fuses on a gas Whirlpool, blower housing and heat housing, before the igniter and the coils.
The burnt terminal block, diagnosed from a photo: a loose red wire and the wrong screw.
A gas Whirlpool with no glow and good thermostats: the supply to the igniter is next.
The symptom as an owner phrased it after replacing the element and the timer.
The question owners ask after the second fuse: how many thermostats there are.
A technician on the burnt terminal block: replace the $14 block with the cord.

Method. 427 threads gathered 2026-09-13 from r/appliancerepair (239), r/Appliances (159), r/HomeImprovement (29), through Reddit's public search, sorted by top and by relevance for nine dryer-no-heat queries (four of them brand-specific); Reddit blocked a share of thread fetches, so this is a sample of top-voted discussion and not a complete count. The unit of analysis is a comment or post in a thread whose title names a Whirlpool dryer, or that itself names Whirlpool and a dryer term (227 of 4,702 posts and comments harvested); AutoModerator and bot comments are excluded. Themes are keyword matches on the comment's text; a comment can match several. Quotes are trimmed for length and profanity; where a post rather than a comment is quoted, its title is shown before its body; nothing is reworded. Scores are Reddit upvotes at harvest time.
